Been on a 47-footer but never hit a wave like this. Couldn't believe the images when we received them at the Coast Guard Channel so we had to share.

Hats off to all you surfmen out there.

Cool shot. Really shows what the boat can do.. but is it me or did it look like after it recoverd, they were "heading back in"? Think after that roll, I'd be RTB too.. Eek

That's what it looked like to me, too. I had another shot that had them even closer in but didn't add it because I ran out of music. Wink

And the point seemed to have been made.

I had received the photos from a reservist and sent it out to all of the former Coasties I work with; cool photos indeed.

On the topic of 47' MLBs, just watched an episode of "Building the Ultimate" on the Science Channel called "Safe Squads". One segment shows how the 47's are built and footage of a CCG/GCC 47 u/w for some Oscar drills. There is a brief shot of a USCG 47 in heavy surf.

The MISHAP from that knockdown is a pretty amazing read as well. The 47 is a major pain in the arse to drive in the wind but I wouldn't want to be on anything else in heavy weather.

I still like the 44 if I am not going far, say a mile or two. Plus the 44's were not prone to launching off the back of a wave.

I'll bet the Senior Surfman aboard was saying "Power, Power, Power" while the crew was saying "Oh S _ _ t, Oh S _ _ t, Oh S _ _ t." Super job by the entire crew to get through the wave and back to the station. R

Took us awhile but we finally found the photographer that snapped these amazing shots and want to give credit where credit is due.

It's Gary Robertshaw.

Nice stuff.

Or on the MLC MISHAP reporting page. Unless you're at a station you probably won't see it on CGMS.

Dave - I know you've been out there many times performing drills in excellent training conditions, only to look up and go "oh $hit look at that one coming in." Pretty much what happenedhere. The crew at MB is excellent, their OIC is one of the best.

Your right on all accounts, $hit does happen. All else aside, great photos, one to hang on the wall. Dave
