An apartment complex in San Antonio that turned away a married couple because of their tattoos defends its policy banning large tattoos and other body art can legally do that, Texas housing officials said. Gilbert Carrillo is proud of his tattoos, which regularly draw compliments. One of his tattoos was featured in a magazine. "Ever since I was 18, to now, 25, is little bit by bit, just covering up here, covering up there," Carrillo said. But last month, Carrillo's tattoos kept him and his wife, Melissa, from moving into The Villas apartment complex. "We liked the apartment, we brought them a check for the deposit and a check for the application fee," Carrillo said. But one day after Carrillo went to see the apartment wearing a short-sleeve shirt, he was told he didn't qualify to live there. The management said his tattoos violated the complex's policy on personal appearance. "For them to be so judgmental upon a person's appearance, and for them to judge somebody based upon them having a tattoo is just ridiculous, you know," Carrillo said. Not only do the Carrillos feel that the policy is discriminatory, they were also upset that the manager refused to refund the couple's full $70 application fee. The manager of the complex, Daisy Salazar, told a reporter with WOAI-TV that she was not allowed to talk about the policy or the lack of the refund. One of the owners of the apartment, a southern California physician named Edward Frankel, replied to an e-mail about the policy saying his complexes do "reject prospective tenants who have... tattoos exposed on the neck, head, hands and wrists, or large tattoos that cover over 40 percent of the lower or upper arm." Frankel and his partners have purchased a number of upscale apartment complexes in San Antonio and Dallas, where they have also banned pierced tongues and eyebrows and tenants can't have more than one nose piercing or five earrings. But Frankel said the policy is not discriminatory. "The above applies to persons of any race, color, gender, etc," Frankel wrote. Texas housing officials said the rules may be unusual, but are not illegal. "Refusing to rent to somebody because they have tattoos may be unfair, but is not necessarily discrimination under the Fair Housing Act, unless the tattoos are specific to the person's religion or national origin," said Sandy Tamez of the San Antonio Fair Housing Council. After the San Antonio television station began asking questions about the case, the complex did refund the Carrillos' full application fee, but the couple is still angry that a landlord would consider body art to be the mark of a bad tenant. Looks like the CG isn't alone in judging people based on the color IN their skin. |

Just think in 50 years or less, all these youngsters will be senior citizens. "Granny...is that a picture of Willie Nelson on your breast?" "No honey, it is a rose, that has wilted and sagged."
Just think of all the beautiful "Granny tramp stamps" that will be around... |

Who cares is 50 years, or 40... whatever. You think a 70 man is going to care that his tattoos sag when he has to get his diaper changed 4 times a day? Plus he did what he wanted at the time and that's what matters.
Also I HATE the term "tramp stamp" that's been used over the last 5 years or so. Before you giggle, yes I have one there and I got it a VERY long time ago, before it was "Cool". Judge lest ye be judged! Or some sh-t like that |

The verse you are trying to refer is Judge Not Lest Ye Be Judged and your last comment of "Or some sh-t like that" is pretty off base seeing as how the "quote" that you referred was from the Bible. Matthew 7:1 Think about it... |

I know it was. I was being facetious. No need to think about it, but thank you for offering me some mind candy. |

Again, I was being facetious. I know there are plenty of older folks that have all their capacities. My Aunt is 74 and still mows her own lawn. She's my hero! |

I believe it is to stand out and get attention aka to be cool or something like that..same reason some folks put lights on the bottom of there cars or play music so loud you can hear it down the block..it is a look at me sorta thing. Back in the day a tattoo might mean you were a former sailor or biker or even just got out of prison..but nowadays i see them on the back of chicks butts...i had a few friends that tried to get me to get one when i was on the sweetgum outta the baltimore yards in maryland...i passed.. i must admit i would have except ...well i am cheap..and a small tat is still to expensive for me to waste money on even back in my younger days. maybe i might get said logo or print on a t-shirt |

Space, I believe… no, I know, you are wrong. I have three tattoos and none were put on me to make me feel cool… or to get attention. I didn’t get them to make people think I was in prison… or a biker. I got them because I wanted them and they had meaning to me.
I waited until I was about 45 to get my first tattoo. And it has A LOT of meaning to me. It has a pissed off eagle breaking through an American flag with the words underneath saying “Freedom Isn’t Free”. It speaks volumes for me! My second tattoo is a custom with an anchor and ship’s wheel… a hidden shark… a hidden dolphin… and a hidden Irish flag. It means a lot to me. My third… is funny. I have a huge gash in my leg that looks like a shark bite so I had the tooth of a great white tattooed next to it. I like it. You know, some people do things for themselves and not for others. Sadly, your opinion in this case, was far off base. BTW, I am going to get a few more. One with my wife and children’s name on it. It’s being designed now. Wanna come and see it being put on? Maybe it’ll help you understand. Lastly, two threads on one topic is un-cool… |

Space, first, you didn’t offend me! It takes a lot more than that to get to me.
Second… I do NOT want to see your tattoo!! My mother-in-law visited here about three months ago. She wanted to get a tattoo on her butt. So, I found a good one that she liked and off we went. The pictures I took of my mom-in-law getting her butt tattooed are quite funny! I wish I could post them here, but I know she would kill me!! I will get another one soon. I am putting together what I want and then I give the list to the artist and he designs it. When his drawing meets my idea… back in the chair I go… |
