TWO Years?? Are you kidding me? We have folks that haven't put on a uniform in 10-20 years that are offering all manner of advice from evals, new kids in the guard, to awards. All of which things that they can't possibly know anything about in today's CG.

10-20 years? Nonsense! I haven't worn a uniform in 36 years. Eek

And I try to NOT give advice on those things that I know nothing about. On the other hand, I will always submit my OPINION of things like awards proliferation. Razz

I retired my uniform, not my brain......

Oh, and don't forget, this site was STARTED by a retired Coastie. Cool

So much for the traditions of the service.

Much as you feel some of us old duffers have no basis for our comments on today's Coast Guard, you have no idea how you will feel in 40 years.

i will probably always look at these boards. i have learned several valuable lessons from post by "old guard" sailors. wish i had the chance to serve with them.

lost my grandfather in 2006 to leukemia. retired Air Force Master Sergeant with one tour in Korea and 3 in Vietnam. I miss him everyday just for the shear fact i don't get to hear his military stories anyone. i learned so much from his experiences.

one short story i "experienced" with him. i reported to DALLAS in 2002 right out of boot camp. he came to charleston to see me in uniform and check out my unit. i was showing him around (only my 4th day onboard) and we ran into the Capt. They began talking and my grandpa asked "how many people are at this unit?" the Capt said 175 and with a straight face and 100% serious Papa said "What the he** is an O-6 doing commanding this unit? I had 250 airmen under me as an E-6 in Vietnam. I thought for sure the CO would be an O-2" Great impression for the brand new E-2 to have with the Capt. He loved it!!! After that Papa disappeared into the Chief's Mess and I have no idea how long he stayed, I left on liberty!

Everytime I saw him after that he reminded me of the overkill an O-6 is on a 378.

Semper, I actually had an opposite experience.

When I was on the 82 footer, we had an E-9 as an OINC. (I believe some actually had E-8's). But we had a gray navy boat which was 85 feet long that had a LCDR as the CO! Those guys couldn't believe that we had an E-9 as the OIC. And they really flipped a lid when I told them that some where E-8's!
