Does anyone realize that, since the establishment of the Intelligence Specialist rating, we, as a community have failed to properly denigrate, demean or bemoan these people. No funny names for them, no stupid tricks on the IS ...

Personally, I am disappointed we have failed in our service ethos to treat everyone the same ... like $hit!

SA - I figured your satirical sense of humor would have caught the irony of your post; but ponder for a moment this comparison; fill in the blank - If Military Intelligence is a contradiction of terms then and Intelligence Specialist is ________________?

Go figure you would have to have an old SK spell it out for you!!!

Since the Intel Specialist rating came out of the OS rating, which came out of the TC rating, which came out of the RM rating, allow me the first honors...

An oxymoron by any other definition is still an oxymoron. Razz

I think an Intelligence Technician sounds better than Specialist. Then the abbreviation could be IT.

The term Specialist gives the impression that the rating is not only Intelligent, but its also Special. We all know thats not the case with either term when referencing anything in the CG except BMs, and Special in this case more than likely is defined under an underdeveloped or educational needs connotation. Technicians and Specialists , Oh My, These ratings have not kept with the current trend and are in need of a "make over"

Gunners Mate - as there is no longer a Warrant Gunner, but a WEPS,no need for a Mate. The Weapons Technician (WT)

Electricians Mate - again no longer a Warrant Electrician, no need for a Mate, the Electrical Specialist (ES)

Yeoman - with the rampant PC in the CG surprised that rating is not the Administrative Specialist (AS)

Damage Controlman - As with the Yeoman, the Repair Technician (RT)

Storekeeper - kind of describes their duties already. The Procurement Specialist (PS). May have to duke it out with the Reservists, but rumors abound to renaming their specific rating. Besides, they're used to getting things pawned off on them second hand.

Boatswains Mate - the Warrant Boatswain is still around, but that name "Boatswain" conjures up more to do with things specific to the deck department of a ship. The specialty has become so " diverse" (got to use a PC word) in its general job description. In keeping with your "maritime" theme . Perhaps the Maritime Utility Technician (MUT).

About 15 years ago, MCPO Rick Trent, then PACAREA Command Enlisted Advisor, was speaking to an all hands meeting at CAMSPAC, Point Reyes Station. He told us that, "the Coast Guard is too small a service to afford specialists. Everyone" he said, "must be a generalist".

I disagreed. I uttered that I sure wouldn't want a Damage Controleman administer vaccination shots or assist the Dental Officer. Likewise, I objected to the notion of Machinery Technicians administrating my personnel and pay records or Non-Rates guarding 500 Kilohertz, then, the International CW (Morse Code) Calling and Destress Frequency.

Then came the era of Total Quality Management where anyone was ordered to sit on Quality Action Teams and offer solutions to just about every problem imaginable, reguardless of their personal training and education.

I was aquainted with some Navy Intelligence Specialists several years ago. They claimed that their particular rating was the most boring job imaginable. Be careful for what you wish for in life. That which might appear sexy may, in reality, become a real drag.

Not everything is as it appears.

Yeah, a special team of the DOGRATTMUTS are testing new ammunition, low-lead version.

They're the Bullet Assessment, Low Lead Survey (DOGRATTMUTSBALLS)
