This question may seem like an odd one, but I figured this forum would be the quickest way to find an answer. Is there a requirement when females are billeted to a land station (in my case a Sector) that they have their own head (bathroom) or changing/shower area? It recently came to my attention that the females at my station were told there was no requirement and as such their female only head was changed to a communal one.

The answer is in the Civil Engineering Manual, COMDTINST M11000.11A, Chapter 10.
It says this:

Does anyone remember that issue at the Finance Center a few years ago where they had a civilian who had gone through a sex change? She wanted to use the new selected sexes bathroom, yet the men didnt want it useing theirs, and the ladies didnt want it useing theirs.
If I understand it correctly, they built a unisex bathroom so the problem would go away. I probably would have rented a few portapottys and told everyone to have at it. Never been one to really give a crap about whats politically correct. Only now I have to deal with unions. T |

Let’s see…
The command says that there is no requirement for separate facilities but I don’t believe it. What should I do? Believe the command? Nope, they are the government’s equivalent to Big Business. Ask the Gold Badge? Nope, I wouldn’t want to let them know that I feel that the command is lying to me! Look the information up for myself? Nope, that h-a-r-d! Go to Military.com and see what they think? Yep, they know more than the command On this Memorial Day, I will say an extra pray for the U. S. Military. Sounds like it needs prayer. |

Look on the inside of the door.. the handle will have a little button or knob to lock it... Try that. it works for most people. Wray.... This message has been edited. Last edited by: Wray, |

To me – and I know that I have been retired for a while so his can easily fall on deaf ears – this question is proof that common sense isn’t common.
A lock on the door! Oh my… what is this world coming too? I need a drink! |

We had One Male and One Female Head at what was a Group, now a Sector. They serviced all the staff, regardless of rank, civilians, guests, and were not outfitted with showers, etc. Dayworkers, not SAR or ATON. We asked for a single locker to hang things in, and it was moved in and shared, problem solved . . . the door already had a lock, so did the one stall.
We did ask for frilly curtains, just to see what they'd say, and I can't print the response here!! We all had a good laugh and then got back to work! Choose your battles . . .and don't wait til the last minute!!! |

The BIG question is. To leave the seat up, or seat down?
My 1st station, this was in early 79. Station had a large head on both floors. But, the 1st floor had a berthing area that was for the OINC that had it's own head. Our 2 females shared this room. The OINC did not stay onboard and he had stated if he was to, he would bunk in one of the other berthing units. When I was at the Group, we had ONE head with doors that lock. Guess what? We had no females there. When we had a reserve drill (a RM3 who was the RM1's wife), she locked the door. District, TRACEN had MEN and WOMEN heads. When moms go along with us on campouts, they ask about where they can go. I point to an adjacent tree and say "that one, because it has more leaves". This message has been edited. TC1,
Hope you have training for plant identification before you go out to the woods too! Somewhere between growing up with 6 brothers and 5 sisters, Girl Scouts, Boot Camp and camping and rafting with Coasties in the hills of West Virginia, and numerous places in Maine, I think I could start a thread that would have everyone in Depends pretty quickly cause there just wouldn't be enough time to get there!! Of course, it might offend some . . .but not too many who'd been there and done that too! Saw a vanity license plate recently that said 'PB4UGO' . . .they've got a point! |

I can see why now many people have given up on using Fred’s place as a resource. My question was answered by 92guru right off the bat, even listed the reference. Thanks. Exactly what I was looking for. Could I have found this myself, sure but if you don't know where to start, is it wrong to ask? I thought that was what this forum was for.
Following that most of the remarks were either sarcastic or just plan juvenile. For the retired members, I thank you for your service, but times have changed. While this doesn't always make it easy, it is policy. Wray, yes I was a command Chief and this question never came up. We had 3 females at my previous unit; they had their own locker room. I figured it was required for units that had females, so after hearing my current unit was not following this I decided to post the question. Enjoy your memorial day. |

We have a sign with both on it, door locks, there is a can of air freshener... we figured it out. Alternative signs
Thankfully someone figured out the reg so we are "safe". (Kona1, some of us are just trying to have fun after the poser adventure. Your question was answered and the rest is tongue in cheek. Happy day to you as well.) --M |

Kona1-As a Command Chief, I would hope you would understand a little goofing off...especially seeing how a female (YN102) has responded with humorous intent; as if the emoticons didn't give away the "ha ha" in all this...
Alas, I agree with you that these forums get out of hand with personal bias. But if you got your answer "right off the bat", why waste your time and get yourself all worked up by reading the rest of the blog??? Either way, good luck in your position at Sector so-and-so...(your profile is private)...and hopefully next time you don;t find your questions answered with so much grief... |

Kona-1,
I wasn't trying to be a smart a$$, TC1 just cracked me up with flashbacks! I visited the same unit referenced previously not long ago, and 5+ years after retiring, they're still the only facilities outside the CommCen and CO Head in that building. A number of units I served at over 21+ years hadn't been remodeled in decades, and had plenty of females there. Even HQ didn't get showers til they build the gym. Some were historic buildings that weren't going to ever be changed. We used many of the options mentioned here by others. Even some SAR or ATON job, did not have "locker rooms," let alone separate facilities for males & females. We all shared. And if there was a female head, it was shared with all females who needed it, whether they were guests of the command, family and guests of shipmates, or SAR survivors. Sorry we got off track with the bathroom humor! I don't believe anyone meant any malicious intent, let alone juvenile. Ya have to laugh along the way! I do have a serious question though, may I inquire as to how one gets to be a Command Chief without having come across staffing and space requirements of the unit? The times have changed, and it's totally possible, I'm just wondering. I used it all the time, but that may have been because I was the era that transitioned offices from Flight Deck Desks to Cubicles. It really does explain an awful lot and is a great reference! If you have any other questions in the female realm, please feel free to drop me a line if you don't want to post here! Regards, YN102 |

Yep, times have changed! No more joking around. No more sarcasm. The command's word means nothing. Yep, times HAVE changed. Please note: times have changed so I am adding this little smilie and explanation telling those that needed changing that my words are written as sarcasm. |
