Will someone, please, get the Commandant's medals properly mounted? It is never correct, unless you have only one medal, to have a single medal in the top row. Our most senior leaders have a chronic problem with this medal mounting issue. It is embarassing to see our most senior people unable or unwilling to comply with the uniform regulations.

First, post the pic you are talking about so the rest of us understand, and second, post the supporting info from the uniform regs please. Where does it say you cant have one medal on top?

The idea of this forum is to have a discussion, not hit and run attacks on our senior leaders.

I used to have a ribbon bar with one on top. I too am very curious about our outraged one's source to be cited!

Wray and tony-

I think he means the pic in this thread:

IS IT TOO EARLY TO SPECULATE ABOUT THE NEXT COMMANDANT?

Follow the link Duckcop posted and blow the flickr pic up to the original size.

My question is....what are you supposed to do with that odd medal? Tuck it in your pocket?

Paul,

Why don't you just email him directly and tell him he's incorrect? Why ask someone else to do it?

I know in his first official portrait, he was missing several appertunances (sp?) on his ribbons. The first thing that stood out for me when I saw it was that he was missing his stars on his National Defense Medal. It looks like he has corrected many of his ribbons in his latest portrait.

The RECOMMENDED arrangement would be 5 - 5 - 3 for large medals. If you're going with 4 or 5 per row, then they should all have the overlap so as not to extend beyond 4 ?/? " per row.

If that arrangement is to stretch 'em out, then as long as the four overlap correctly, then it could be kosher.

I'd be interested in knowing just WHY, when awarding a second, of the same decoration, they go about hanging another medal pendant on the chest, vs, presenting the citation and the gold star. Somewhere it states that only ONE presentation of the medal pendant is made. Subsequent awards only receive the gold star

But the major question is, why do those of the 3 star persuasion wear their collar insignia contrary to the uniform regs. Roll Eyes Wink

That would require me to join facebook and I don't have any desire to do do. Plus it will be a fairly long missive that not everyone needs to see.

Thanks for the thought though.

Actually, you got it backwards, MM.

Page 3-86 (AKA Page 119) of the Uniform Manual has it as 3 medals on top, and 5 medals on each of the bottom rows, not to exceed 4-1/8 inches (which is where the staggering would come in).

It's the same count (3-5-5) for both the Large and Minis.

CAPT:

One medal can be on top, if you have three on the bottom. For some reason, that is the only time to display one on top, according to the chart listed. This is for Large medals only; Minis would be displayed as 2-2.

That's what I'm afraid of. I'm on about 5 different military sites now. Add anything else and I'd have to put in overtime, and now that I am retired that is NOT an option!

I was looking at the picture of VADM Crea's retirement, which someone has now posted. Please note the two VADM's have it correct.

I would think the Commandant's aide or the MCPOCG would have addressed this issue long ago.

Not intended to be a hit and run - just an effort to square away something that is presented during swab summer as part of the indoc program for new cadets.

I did say please ...

My eyesight is not what it used to be, but I think he is wearing 13 medals. If so, there should be 4 in the top row, 4 in the second row and 5 in the bottom row. You could look it up.

I'll defer to JerryG's analysis - I believe he is correct as he has looked in the book - I'm operating from memory.

The uniform regs are not recommendations...

I'll be quiet now.

The problem Cap, is that in the graphic/instructions on how to arrange large/miniature they powers that be do use the word RECOMMENDED. And that is what would make it difficult to pick the fly shlitz out of the pepper.

Looking back through old regulations, the 1997 regs were specific in mounting, but by 2006 the regs got wishy washy using the term "SHOULD". Then the 2009 using "RECOMMENDED"

I don't see recommended - am I looking at an outdated version? What is the current version?

BTW, I think having ADM Allen as Commandant is the best thing to happen to the USCG in a very long time. I hold him in the highest personal regard.
