I always carry a flag with me. From time to time I'm at public meetings (even veteran's groups) that don't have a flag.
I always treat it carefully because I've never seen it, new with its bright colors and gleaming whites or old and faded.
I can't imagine not being moved by the sight of the American flag.
When I see one flying upside down, I always stop and let them know, though as often as not, I get and look that says, "Who cares."
I know there are those who would like to see a law passed to protect our flag. As unpopular as it may be and as contradictory as this may sound, I hope they never do. A law like that would be like setting a torch to the Constitution, and that would alter how I feel about that flag.
I stand with a Congressman that is no longer with us, Henry B. Gonzales. I don't want an admendment, if someone burns the flag in front of me, I'll take my thirty days for busting his nose to raise the flag up again and consider both as my patriotic duty.
I don't see why it should be a big deal or needs a law. People IN UNIFORM salute. Not in uniform, render proper respect (the old way). Put your hand over your heart. Not that this matters but in the boy scouts. You do the following.
In a class "A" uniform (tan shirt/green pants w/meritbages, rank, etc.. desplayed) salute. 3 fingers to the brow using right hand.
In a class "B" uniform (scout T-shirt), salute over the heart.
In regular clothes. Hand over heart.
Did someone complain about this or did congress not have anything better to do?
I was at my local St. Patricks Day parade this year and several members of a JROTC unit, in uniform, ended up standing beside me after they finished marching. Not one of them rendered honors to the colors as they passed in parade. I spoke to these young people in a nice way and asked if they had been instructed in the proper way to render honors. I saw a couple of other guys in the immediate area wearing veterans pins, hats that noticed this as well. I told them of the proper procedure. Part of the group began giving the salutes, part of them said they didn't care about it. I hope they phone call to the USAF (Ret) Colonel who head up their program helps.
So, what's the penalty for when someone catches me saluting a flag? And who is going to enforce/administer it? hell, I've been out of the service for 30+ years, I'll do wwhatever I want!
I can't believe he said that! I wasn't going to vote for him anyways but still can't believe he would say something so stupid in my opinion! Peace, Dick

It's the same penalty as for those non-military types that don't render proper honors. Hopefully, you don't take any action when people don't stand or place their hand over their heart when the colors pass or the National Anthem is played. If you're not going to do it correctly, don't expect others to.

I have been known to mention to people that they should stand and place their hand over their heart. Sometimes I merely give them a dirty look. And yes, sometimes I ignore the dumb bastards.
Actually I do it correctly. The point I was poorly attempting to make is that without any plans for enforcement a law is a waste of time.
