If you attended the Chief's Academy in New London between 1999-2002, you had Captain Peg Reiley visit your class as she was the LDC Director. Unfortunately she passed away yesterday in New Hampshire. I really admired her and she was a tough old gal who used to come back to my cubicle and talk Notre Dame football. I retired 5 years ago, but I know Peg Riley did alot for my present success in life. In 2001, I was sent TAD to EAGLE for their Europe patrol, as their FSC made warrant. Three months into the patrol, I asked Capt. Luke if I could PCS to Eagle and not go back to LDC. Capt. Luke, a crusty old salt, said "Senior Chief I can't go up against that old gal, she wants you back". RIP Captain Reiley.
That is surprising as she did not retire too long ago. When she was at ISC Boston and known as MA Riley, she cracked the whip and did not take any BS from anyone. I am sorry to hear this.
She was the XO at Station St. Pete (co-located with Group St. Pete) back in '79. Very straight forward, and actually caring for the crew. She gave my wife and I a set of crib sheets when our daughter was born (I was a BM2). I ran into her back in '96 at GI, she actually recognized me and we talked about St. Pete as we rode the ferry back to Manhatten. As I recall the crew at Egmont Key named one of their two setters after her "Riley", the other was named after the Group Commander (Gilbert). She was ok. R
CAPT Riley was a CO of SUPRTCEN Boston. In 1997, I applied for the position to be her Secretary. Unfortunately, the CG pay just didn't cut it for me (still doesn't), so I moved on. I had much admiration for CAPT Riley.
She is a legend for sure. Her name will never be forgotten by the folks that served with her.
