In May of 1970, a month before I enlisted, there was a photograph in the San Diego Union of the CGC Acushnet (which was then an oceanographic research vessel {WAGO}), tied up to the Naval Electronics Lab pier on Point Loma in San Diego Bay where someone had snuck up and spray painted "FOR SALE - CHEAP" and a peace sign on the Acushnet's hull.
Betchu dollars to donughts that the duty section for that night caught holy hell.
In Jan/Feb 1966 was on the WPG-36 Spencer. Lost a prop shaft on Bravo Patrol. Made it to St. Johns, Newfoundland. One of the best weeks of drydock I ever had.
