Check with your district or area Morale Officer for possible grants.

Many units recieve money from the Coast Guard Foundation in the way of Evergreen Funds, a message goes out sometime during the year asking units to forward requests for funds. Here is a portion of 2004 message.

"2. THE COAST GUARD FOUNDATION, THROUGH ITS GIFT PROGRAM, PROVIDES
SUBSTANTIAL SUPPORT TO THE COAST GUARD. ONE PART OF THAT GIFT
PROGRAM SUPPORTS THE COAST GUARDS EVERGREEN FUND. THE EVERGREEN
FUND CONTAINS NON-APPROPRIATED (GIFT) FUNDS AVAILABLE TO SUPPORT
APPROVED COMMAND AND QUALITY OF LIFE PROJECTS COSTING LESS THAN 10
THOUSAND DOLLARS PER PROJECT. LAST YEAR, THE COAST GUARD FOUNDATION
PROVIDED OVER 600 THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR FITNESS EQUIPMENT, LEARNING
CENTERS, SHIPBOARD ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEMS AND MANY OTHER QUALITY OF
LIFE PROJECTS."

I can't remember when during the year the message goes out but each AREA, MLC, and Districts have a designated Evergreen POC. You need to find out who that and contact them.

Also keep an eye out for the Evergreen Funds message. They do good things for folks that need stuff like this. The message came out for this year in January. You can find the message via a CGWeb search.

Go to your nearest DOD base and ask them to give you their used machines/weights (they continually update). That's how San Diego started their hanger gym.

If you are a Unit Health Promotion Coordinator, talk to your Health Promotion Manager at ISC/District. They usually have end of FY funds available. It's a first come, first serve thing. If it's over $2500, you'll need to submit 3 bids for it. The HPM will be able to assist you more on it. Good luck. I used them to purchase a new treadmill, eliptical, and nautilus weights for my old unit. You can also use unit funds. Check with the XO/XPO or SK.

RBruce is probably right. Athletic equipment would probably be more appreciated and better cared for if the individual members of a command paid for their own materials.

Gone are the days when Uncle Sam paid for everything. There comes a time when you've got to pay your own way.

I bought a used Tunturi rowing machine for $35 at Play it Again Sports. They have used treadmills, free weights, Universal Gyms, Soloflex, and punching bags at a resonable price. For less than $1000, you can outfit a nice exercise room.

When the Mackinaw was decom'd the gym equipment was left onboard. Maybe the museum will let you have it if you pay for shipping, it appears to just be in the way.

Steve, I sent you a couple emails in the last couple weeks, one about CG day and one about Mike Montes. I ended up not going to CG day, I had a college paper due that day and I was way behind. Finally got it in right before the deadline.

Right, Steve Montes. Was he an MKC on the Confidence? When and how and where did he die?

I read something about CG Day in Clearwater for the Tampa Bay area, does St. Pete have one too?

I'm thinking about the Keys for a week this winter or fall, if I graduate college.

Fitness equipment is available with unit funds from GSA. If its over 2500 you need to look at 3 schedules. Its the end of the year if you do your research and are ready there is almost always money. Talk to your supply folks.
