We have a 118 degree heat index right now.....

Good thing that my fridge is keeping my beer ice cold and my a/c is keeping me ice cold. I just stepped outside and nearly suffocated!

Come on October!

July of last year, here in northern california, mid-point between San Francisco and Sacramento, we had a bit of a heatwave where the high for one day was 123 in the shade. For comparison sake, I looked at various temperatures across the nation, especially Death Valley, California, which usually the hot spot in the nation (Bad Water). Death Valley was only showing 113 at the same time.

This last winter, the changing climate made up for the hot spells of the summer and in late January, our pool showed a skim of ice for over a week and a half, something I've not seen in this part of the country.

This summer has been relatively cool with temperatures avaraging around 85 with a few hot spells of a hundred or so.

With August almost a third of the way through, some of the big box stores and the base exchange are already putting up their Christmas stuff. There is absolutely no cooling effect to come into a shop from the 90 or so outside and see rows of decrated trees, santas and other stuff.

My only home is that this coming winter doesn't bring more El Nino related storms. We've taken out flood insurance just in case however.

Hang in there!

In Fremont, CA (down the road a piece from San Francisco), it's a pleasant 66° -- and the usual afternoon breeze just came up. Razz Cool

Still the same.....I just went back outside and nearly died...the only thing that saved me was the ice cold beer in my hand!

I bought one of those knock-off misters for my back porch last week. It helps a little bit, but it sure doesn't cool the air by 30 degrees like it advertised! It does provide a nice mist that just barely gets you damp. Add the ceiling fan on the porch, some shade, music, and a cold beverage and it's STILL HOT AS $HIT! ha ha ha

Looks like I'll park my butt under the a/c vent on my couch and watch some TV for while!

George,

Just caught your Delta Breeze here in Vacaville and it's a nice 82. All the windows are open and A/C is secured.

Still probably better off then being on a 210 in the Bering sea in late Winter with the internal ship's heating system tango-uniform and some of the crew experiencing a bladder infection and then all hands being called out during a temporary lul in the storm to break ice from all topside decks, spaces and the antennas. Frown

Sure made these hot summer days look good!

I have good news and bad, so I will lead off with the bad. You will be talking about the threat of a Hurricane in a little over a week. The good news is that it will give you a little break from the heat.

Just got an update from 3 seperate weather agencies, and all models show a Hurricane threatening the US in about a week and a half. No clue where is makes landfall, but there was one run that made the path copy Katrina.

It's a little after 0700 PDT, and the official Fremont CA temp is 53°. I think it's actually a little warmer than that -- closer to 60° I'd say. It's supposed to get up to 76° today, depending on whether or not the marine layer burns off early. One of my reasons, some 37 years ago, for leaving Long Island NY for the SF Bay Area was to get away from all the Summer heat and humidity. Another was to get away from the Winter cold, snow and ice. I don't miss the 4 seasons at all -- two is enough: rainy season and dry season. I've never had a outside event "rained out" in July or August! Cool

Chicago's been 70's at night, upper 80's/lower 90's for the past week or so during the day, with frequent thunderstorms and high humidity (heat index at 100).

A/C, cold beer, and backyard pool all make it bearable.

I talked to a man from New Orleans today. He said they hadn't had any help and some residents haven't come back. He told me about the possible hurricane, I said "if a mandatroy evacuation were enforced they'd at least have full gas tanks and take the items most precious to them. He agreed but we here in LA LA Land do the same about earthquakes. Hide our head in the sand. I'm prepared as much as I can do but I'm unusual. the neighbors think I'm nuts

Interesting, studies show that only 30% of the population is prepared for a disaster. It seems to go up a little in areas that have recently gone through a disaster, and then drops significantly after 4 years back to pre disaster levels. If everyone was prepared, I wouldnt have a job, yet I wouldnt mind giving up a job to know everyone was prepared. Next week, I have to speak on a case study I did on the Enterprise Al tornado for 150 members of public schools. Should be fun, and it is my hope that when I am done, it will be well known that when the Storm Prediction Center issues a "High" risk of severe weather, you better cancel classes.

Currently working on two projects in the pipeline that are post Virginia Tech related, and both allow Deans to activate a text emergency warning system from any PC. But thats another issue.
