I'm looking at the MITAGS 2 year Workboat Mate Program (OSV). Does anyone know about this program (aside from the stuff on their website), or have any input on the facility/staff?
Which MITAGS, there is one on the East Coast and one on the West Coast as well.
Both a great facilities with excellent instructors. Possibly two of the best training facilities in the world for Merchant Mariners (outside of Kings Point or course).
Good schools. I'm going to PMI in seattle for my 3rd Mate. (the west coast affiliate to MITAGS in MD). The workboat program looks good - "Cadet" seatime and decent job placement. If you have two years to kill, why not? Good way to find out about the industry too - seems like you're up for that. You can bumble around as a deckhand for a couple of years - or go to school. Both have their ups and downs. Good luck.
I believe they also have a 25 week Mate program... if you have AB and sea time. I got out of the CG after 7 years... probably not the smartest move, but it seems like it's going to pay off if everything works out. Geographic stability and better salary will hopefully make it worth it in the long run. I may only see my house a few months a year, but at least it will be in the same place! Good luck to you as well!
