tc1uscg,

I guess I should have pointed that out in the beginning. The first time I heard the name I blew a mouthful of Coke throught my nose.

Diligence-DillXXX (fill it in)
Evergreen-Evergone
Resolute-Rottie-Toot (Roach Coach)

and so on.
I'm sure, there were times that these names didn't sit well with the crew but everyone survived. Those that didn't got past it. As twisted or off color as the renaming of the cutter, it was pretty good. Applause Other then that.. another tradition gone to dung because of the sake to be PC.

I wonder if that big painted sign that had the names of some of the cutters, including SPERMAN is still up on that hill pulling in to Dutch Harbor?

I'm all for those tried and true nicknames that crews have given their cutters and others' cutters.

I don't object to the nicknaming or otherwise word play on a cutter name - but I found the manner in which it was used offensive as did someone else who stated so. I asked Infantry if he would change his post - and he did; thank you Infantry32.

Dennis the practice has not been relegated to the dung heap; we called the VENTUROUS the VENTUNA because of its proximity to the tuna oil plant. The USS SPERRY (AS12) was referred to as Pier 12, testament to it only getting u/w once every 6 months - long enough to go out to sea and dump their effluent tanks. (1971)

Some of the names are quite humorous and others were rather bland.

First time I heard of a cutter having a pen name was in 80, on the Mobile Bay, breaking ice with the West Wind and the "Cracken'all" (Mackinaw). It gives all new meaning to the new one who tried to take out a seawall a while back (which caused the CO to get relieved too) One thing is for sure, the old Mac was sure hard to beat. But even it wasn't as mighty as everyone would think.. at least we you should know better trying to drag a 1000ftr through some nasty ice.. What were they thinking?

As far as Infantry's post, I myself, didn't take it the wrong way, even before he changed it. But some people like coffee, I don't. As long as everyones happy. Roll Eyes

I was trying to show my more feminine, in touch with myself side instead of always being obstinant.

Another name for the Mackinaw..Wide Ass Garbage Barge. I also sailed on the Cows***. Then of course there is the HollyCrash (Hollyhock), we used to call the Bluebell a "Baby Buoy Tender" I know, not so funny but could have been Mini-Me if that term had existed back then. Katmai Bay...Kat. Biscayne Bay...Biscuit. Those are the ones I can remember.

That was exactly it. I think if the name was used when not refering to the fact that it was a female CO I'd have giggled. Just felt it was somewhat... sexist maybe? Anyhwho. Again, I'm normally not that sensitive. Example... the TAMPA is also known as the TAMPAX, in fact we were moored next to it when it was officially renamed by a sneaky individual that actually painted an "X" on the stern. I thought that was damn funny.

Here we are talking about one thing and you bash everybody who isn't an E-7 by 15? grow up.

Also some rates are highly competitive, and only pass 30 or less for advancements.

I made e-3, 3 times, twice from e-2 and once from e-4. If I had stayed in I most likely would have made it a dozen more times before I retired.

$hit, I serve on the Tampon (aka CGC TEMPEST). We've got a nickname for every cutter in our home port, and know what we're called (as evidenced above).

We work with the Tomato (Tornado), Shamal-Toe (Shamal), and the Indecisive (Decisive). Right now we're working with the Gelatin (Gallatin), the Chickenhawk (Mohawk), Cledus (Thetis), and Kris Kross Applesauce (Joshua Appleby).

Pretty much EVERYONE in D7/D8 has a nickname - if you don't know waht you're called, contact me and I'll tell you what your nickname is.
