My kids know I carry a badge and a gun at either job I go to.
My youngest got a kick out of the CG job, calling me a "secret agent". |

We had th same problem explaining "what the Coast Guard did" when we would pitch TV show conepts. Depended on what part of the country the development exec was from, impacted their view of what the Coast Guard did. None of them had the big picture and then we'd show them tape and they would be blown away.

I was at MSD Cove Point from 78 to 81. One CG Day everyone was being thrown into the river. I was the only one dry. Randy picked me up and carried me to the dock. I grabbed his cut-offs and said if I went in he would lose them. He put me down. I pushed him in and walked back to my table totally dry. As you know Randy goes 6'4" over 250 lbs. I am 5'7" and 150 lbs on a good day. It was really funny. I finally did a swan dive into the river when Randy came back. Good times. |

My children know I help people and think that's really cool (even though I now sail a desk and getting ready to retire).

Hey Wray, where is Randy Maxson now? He was CO of Vise when I was FSC on Durable. He lived down the street from me in Clearwater and we shared many a beer together.

Don't you love it when they are right? But LT, I always thought MC Rick M. was the one who did all the yelling? In the CG, my kids knew I worked with radios, and in a safe (behind doors with lots of locks). Last unit, they didn't know, I was always gone. Now, it's sorta the same thing but they think I get to play with LOTS of cell phones, inside a building with lots of security that has pretty lights, lots of cables and very expensive toys everywhere. I took my sons to Station Islamorada and showed them the boats back when I was stationed there. I think they had a fairly good idea what we did on them.
Same with the Customs boats and aircraft later on. My sons during a visit to the Homestead Air Branch, USCS, 2000. Don |

I asked my then-17 year old daughter what was the best part of spending a day with me at work and she replied, "Hearing you say 'yes, sir' repeatedly to the Captain."

When I was in the CG I was childless and single. Years later, when the first "take your daughter to work Day" was held, I took my daughter, who was then about 9 years old, to the job. At that point in my life I was the Chief Engineer of the IBM Building in Manhattan. We had 2 1250 ton electric chilers, 1 1250 ton steam chiller and a 250 ton electric chiller along with assorted condenser and chill water pumps. At any rate I was proud of the building and the plant and told my daughter about what we do for the building.
I must have overwhelmed her, because the next day at school, the teacher asked the kids about what each of their fathers did. Angela told the teacher that "Dad pushes red and green buttons all day". When I first heard that, I was a little insulted because running a 44 story sky scraper was just a bit more complicated then that, but then I thought, "She's 9 years old" She couldn't catch on to what I really do! To this day I bust her chops about it. Bill |

Anyone who has done ATON in the Great Lakes knows of the rush to get aids out before the ice...Was pretty close most times.
The schedule was always changing and I would have to explain to my daughter why I was leaving...again. I started telling her that I had to save the buoys from the ice. For a whole decom season she would get all worried and ask if I got to them in time. Cory |

For the past 20-some years, all my husband tells the girls is "I make the boat go."
