Over on the mutual board, a YN3 mentioned in there post that Fridays are civilian clothes day. I've never been a fan of this, but I've heard of other units doing it. Granted, the YN3 states they are at PPC Topeka, most likely not interacting with the public, but still. Some years back, I remember seeing on some Coastie's e-mail signature, "Your family name and employer are on your uniform, make them both proud". I take pride in both those things. I had a Chief tell me one time, "the reasons we have uniforms, is for uniformity". Any opinions for or against civilian clothes day.

While I am personally NOT a fan, I will concede this seems to have a positive effect on morale. I also saw it where if you participated (not mandatory), you contributed a dollar to the morale fund. A good way to raise some money...

We had it at my last unit, it was $1 to contribute to Moral fund. Civilian attire was to be casual business in nature. Pants (no jeans) with a button up or nice polo style shirt tucked in, no sneakers or open toed shoes.
I never really was a big fan of it.

When we went to Bermuda for three weeks of Search and Rescue Standby civilian clothes were required while on liberty.

Shore Patrol wore uniforms.

I believe that would have been MKCM Kevin Winter, (ret). One of the better ones I have seen!

It happens here at HQ a lot. Never done it myself, don't believe it serves a valid purpose and it is ripe for abuse. The no jeans rule simply isn't used or enforce in most offices. Changed a lot actually since a work uniform became the standard office uniform. I guess folks try to match the level of 'dressiness' of a work uniform vice trops.

We were able to participate in Civ Clothes Day for about a week in the Command Center and it was taken away by the Division Chief because apparently "CASUAL BUSINESS DRESS" wasn't clear enough for everyone.

I've seen (note the past tense) another division (I won't name them but a lot of YN's work there) who's civilian clothes attire was ATROCIOUS! I don't know how the eff they got away with wearing the crap that they did. Jeans below the butt... long sleeve T-shirts that reached almost down to someone's knee. Shorts that just touched the ankles. That is definitely NOT BUSINESS DRESS CASUAL... I'd say jeans, t-shirts, and sneakers are okay. Clean sneakers, clean jeans (no holes, no paint) and an un-offensive T-shirt is fine if you're Div'Os are okay with that...

Why would any deckie want to ruin a nice pair of pants with paint or along the same lines, why would any snipe want grease or oil all over his civies?

Seems like a dumb idea unless you're a desk jockey.

I have always thought for every dress down day we should have a dress up day.

Enlisted want to dress down on Friday OK, next Friday SDB's

Officers are more fun because there are more uniforms to pick from:

One week we could have Service Dress White.

One week SDB's

One week we could have Dinner Dress (blue) for the 0-6's and above Next week Diner Dress (white) .

One week we could make everyone wear their Trench Coasts

And of course we could require all the Enlisted members to wear the AWP we paid them to buy!

Think about the fun we could have!

Does anyone really wonder why people laugh when they talk about us being a branch of the military? I wonder if the Marine Corp has civilian dress day.

Actually, I work on a joint Navy/Marine/Coast Guard watch floor and the Navy/Marine guys in the back do have civvie days where they pay money to wear civvies...they also have bake sales and they leave early on Friday while I stay until 1800 (i'm not kidding)

Everything from hamburgers and hotdogs to cookies and cupcakes...I thought they were joking the first time they asked if I wanted to participate...it's actually pretty funny to see some of these guys behind the tables...

It seems to me that if people want to wear civilian clothes to work there is a really easy way to accomodate that......get out of the military!

I wear civilian clothes 27-29 days of just about every month and I don't even have to contribute to the unit morale fund. Look into it; its called the Coast Guard Reserves.

Take pride in your uniform and save your "casual business dress" attire for church.

Wearing civilian clothes means that I would have to put thought into what I was going to wear from day to day. No thanks, I will just let my wife struggle with that decision.

When I was Officer in Charge of R/O Philly, my first week there the first class informed that on Monday she wouldn't be there because she had a job fair on Sunday and Monday was her "Comp day." I told her comp days were for people on ships not recruiting offices. She was a first class with the Governors Island ferry being her only sea time. She promptly started keeping a log on me and had direct access to Eastern Region Recruiting Center. Anyway, I wonder if sailors on ships have "dress down day?"

I'm not a big fan but if it keeps the crew happy, is well policed, and is relatively infrequent, not a big deal.

As far as the Officers, thank God the Uniform Regs provide for CWOs being permitted to take leave when the uniform of the day is whites Smile
