Clearly subject to personal choice and I am sure there are many others, but the following 5 repeatedly get mentioned as dream billets on this forum.

1) CG Station Panama City, FL
2) CG Station Lake Tahoe, CA
3) CG Station Destin, FL
4) CG Station Cape Disappointment
5) CG Station Honolulu

Anyone have any additions? What are your top 5?

T

I thought you were serious at first, but then I remembered that no one has listed HQs as a dream billet in the history of the forum.

Being retired for more than thirty years "dream" is definitely the proper word. But if...

1) CGC Point Hannon
2) CGC Swivel
3) CGC Snohomish
4) CGC Moray
5) CGC Tackle

My favorites, with one exception, have all been decommissioned. That being said, here's a few generics:

1) Any buoy tender in the 14th District.
2) Any NSC on the West Coast or in the 14th District.
3) Any WHEC in the 14th District,
4) Any WHEC or NSC heading to a war zone. (love them R&R ports!)

Absolute bottom, least favorite, never send me there.....any shore station.

1) Station Apra Harbor, Guam/Done it
2) Sector Guam/Done it
3) WPB-Key West, FL./Done it
4) WPB-St. Pete, FL.
5) Anything Savannah, GA.

I know they are "dream" billets, but the one's I said "Done it", I would do again. At the time 1 and 2 were really the same.

Although CGHQ was not a dream billet, I had no say in the matter; I was flown in, TAD, as an SK1 and given a job assigned to the Deputy for Personnel's Budget Staff. (1- LCDR, 1-LT, 1-GS12, and the lowly SK1 - me). In three years I was initiated as a Chief, Commissioned as a CWO2, and transferred to a 378. All in all, I had a very good tour of duty; I interacted with quite a few LCDR, CDR, and CAPTs who later made flag. Imagine the looks on two Group Commanders faces when, while in formation, the visiting admiral came up, pulled me out of the ranks, and had a 2-3 minute discussion, one on one. If only that group commander knew what I said!

I have to agree, coming from Hono, no-one on the East Coast felt any sympathy. My choices were GI or HQ. Because I was a NY resident, and am the country mouse, not the city mouse, I took HQ. In those days any YNs that were going to make it a career, knew they'd have to pull an MLC or HQ tour at some point. It turned out to be the most enlightening and educational tour, almost all spent in the Legal Dept., plus 3 mos. TAD at the Pentagon. Glad I did it, and like Nobody, the XO of a unit down the road was quite taken aback when a Capt came up from legal for an Investigation and stopped by to say hi by name and chat, and then the MCPOCG greeted me by name a handshake and a hug and asked how the kids were doing . . .Priceless!!

No Dreams, Just Memories.
CGC BIBB WPG 31
CGC EDISTO WAGB 284
CGC GALLATIN WHEC 721
CGC NAUGATUCK WYTM 92
CGC MESQUITE WLB 305
CGC SUNDEW WLB 404
CGC RARITAN WYTM 93
CGC RED BEECH WLM 686
I won't say I never had good duty ashore but for my money a bad day underway was still a good day.

Naahh. IMHO, here are the best. But of course, you know what they say about opinions!

Coast Guard Station Port Canaveral
Coast Guard Station Ft. Lauderdale
Coast Guard Cutter CIMARRON
Coast Guard Recruiting Office Tampa, FL (back when it was actually in Tampa, not St. Petersburg like it is now).

How do I know? I served at all of the above!

I didn't put a number 5, but if I'd served there Coast Guard Station Ponce de Leon Inlet would have been on the list.

As a young unmarried Ensign on CGC Gallatin, I thought GI was a great place to be. I also had a great time at Station Miami Beach. My dream job would had been CO of the 82 in St. Thomas.
