May 27, 2009- BM3 Bridgitte Milheim (center) prepares with classmates for the final jump during training at Army Airborne school. (U.S. Coast Guard photo by CDR Stuart Lebruska)
So... is there a CG mission I am unaware of that would require such training? or is it just another waste? |

cg folks go through airborne school every once in a while. i believe it to be pointless. but in that story they were making a big deal of her gender.

I have known a few that have gone through the training when IMLET was the thing to do if one wanted to "play" Army. It wouldn't surprise me if those in MSST or LEDET don't ask for it either. GUNS |

i don't know what it would be good for, but i say let them do the training. we want to be known as a military service, but when other services let us in, some complain about it.

I wonder why...... ? I also wonder why they have 2 in a seal school? Anyone have a factual answer for these? Wray... |

Having member go through BUDs (sal school) at least makes more sense than going to AIRBORNE school.
At least Coastie SEALs can bring tactics and ideas back to the CG and into the DOG. I highly doubt any BM is going to parachute out of a C130 to get on scene of a SAR case. Perhaps I could one day go learn how to drive a Tank on the CG dime... |

As I recall, when this was first announced, the CG members will be with the SEALs for several years. I would think they may never return to the CG. |

Hey Stan, at least it's an opportunity to wear those DCU's you asked about on a different thread.
No good deed goes unpunished. |

And in an environment where it makes sense to wear them....as opposed to on the bridge of a 378 30 miles offshore..... |

Ain't nothing wrong with a little cross-training.

But then you'd have to find a tank to drive... I just don't recall seeing any at our CG stations over the last 30 years.. Hummmmmm..... Maybe they were well hidden and I just missed them.. Better yet... perhaps they are keeping them at the Air Stations Wray... |

When did it become cool to look and act like soldiers? Do you get more dates looking like a bush? I was a boarding/intel officer during Adm Yost's tenure. People thought I was crazy to spend so much time with the Navy.
It was cool when myself and two other Coasties beat the Navy and Marine Corp students at Dam Neck at the pistol range. I may have looked like a Sear's repairman, but their colorful uniforms didn't make them better shots. The most fun our ship's MLE crew had was terrorizing Seven Elevens enroute to a gun range in North Carolina. Six of us rode in a rental pick-up truck with no written orders and no uniform markings, but armed to the teeth (M-16, shotguns and 45's). Store attendents always came close to hitting the alarm button when all six rushed in to buy Slurpees. We couldn't leave the weapons in the truck. When we told them that we were the Coast Guard, the small town country clerks gave us a disbelieving blank stare. Now if we showed up looking like Army Airborne, we may have had our Slurpees on the house. |

Wray,
It's not such a big jump from a DUKW to a tank. We had one on the Jersey shore many moons ago. |

Tom,
Yes how right you are... but as you say that was many moons ago.. and I haven't seen a DUKW in YEARS.... Wray... |

Oh, come on now, Wray! You ought to know better that we keep them all hidden in plain sight outside of all of those Legion & VFW Halls! This message has been edited. Last edited by: JerryG, Carpe Debier: Seize a Lager! |

My grandfather was a paratrooper in WW II and to this day still insists that there are only two things that fall from the sky, bird **** and fools.

Well now that depends on your perspective. We have a lot of training that we do need for our actual job, that we do not get to send folks too becuase of money....... |

A bad day on the water beats a good day at the office. |
Wray, I think the DUKWs have ended up as tourist rides in DC and other major cities. Not a very dignified end but at least they're being kept in running condition.

The CG used both the DUKW and the LARC:
