Gotta' question...has anyone every been directed not to hand over your ID card to anyone?

I've been to BO, BTM, and FI school and have been told that under no circumstances am I to relinquish my card.

Is this directive written anywhere?

How about when going onto a DoD base with private security?

I've been asked to relinquish my creds for photocopying purposes. Our policy forbids this, and I show my creds, but don't relinquish them.

If challenged, request a supervisor. If challenged again, request the next level. And the next, etc.

With fake CAC cards now surfacing, safeguard your ID.

I do the same for photocopies since that's technically our "insurance card" for medical purposes.

The only time you are required to hand over your military ID is upon request of a sentry (civilian security at front gates of DOD and DHS bases), military police/security or military medical/administrative personnel. At no other time should you ever hand over your military ID and that includes trying to entering a bar. Most state ABC laws, state there must be a photo ID with 5 disciber; which a military ID doesn't have, use your driver's license. Beer

I believe they are height, eye color, birthdate, sex, and *******. I could be wrong on one or more of these. Anyone feel free to correct me.

Most gate guards will take your ID, look at it, return it.

In the commcen, we would take the person ID, fill out the DA1999 (that's what it use to be called) and give it back.

Even after being retired. I've had the doctors office take my ID and photocopy it and put it in my med folder.

Also, the gate guard will confiscate your card if it is expired.

Yes, if your ID is expired, it will be confiscated, by the gate guard. I believe it is government property.

i think you need more information from the original poster for this. i believe if you pull the id out for non-military/government issues (checking out shoes at a bowling alley) they have the right to hold on to it and you can't claim otherwise....if you don't like it, use your drivers lincense instead.....

Back when we had the old ID's, I wrapped my license in a dollar bill and used it as my ID for almost the entire 3 week school I was at. The real kick was that I was in a Navy school in San Diego. Man, they were pissed when they noticed it. They were even more pissed when I told them how long I had been doing it. Violin

Oh well, attention to detail escaped them on that one. Big Grin

You can hand your military ID to the person checking you in (ie you are doing a boarding on a freighter, as ID check are required for most security plans). But they can not hold onto your ID past that point.

lets go to this extreme! your doing a boarding and you get a irrate member threatening to do harm to himself or has a hostage demanding your identification, him not beleiving your who you say you are! Are you going to give it to him?? Hell yeah, if it will calm the situation. either at bo school or the btm roadshow i refused to give it up and was informed otherwise "the gov't will reissue you one if it's legitimately given up in a in an official capacity"

Do they still do the Operation Webfoot intruder exercises? I remember one time during one of those exercises a Marine Major arrived at the gate at Woods Hole stating that he wanted to go to the exchange before boarding the ferry to Martha's Vineyard. I explained that our little exchange was only open for an hour at lunch time.

He then asked if he could speak to the OOD. I said I was the JOOD but would summon the OOD for him. I asked for his ID as he was in civvies. His ID was expired. I promptly had the gate guard "arrest" this man as an obvious "intruder" and part of the exercise.

My bad. He was not a part of the exercise and was not in possession of much of a sense of humor. Fortunately the OOD arrived quickly, a 30 year Warrant or Chief to Lieutenant, who soon calmed the troubled seas by confiscating the expired ID and praising the gate guard and me for a job well done. Last I saw of the two of them they were headed to the Old Man's Office.

When I got my first paycheck at COTP Houston in the fall of 1961, I took it to a local bank to get it cashed. I presented the check with my laminated photographic ID with description & fingerprint for identification. The cashier demanded a Texas drivers license with the comment that "anyone can counterfeit a military ID"
At that time, the Texas DL was a just colored piece of cardboard with typewritten description and a signature - impossible to fake. Big Grin
