" Alaska State Troopers are coordinating search efforts with Coast Guard and Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Service for missing Coast Guardsman east of Ketchikan

JUNEAU, Alaska - The Alaska State Troopers are coordinating search efforts with Coast Guard and Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Service for a Coast Guardsman reported missing after he did not return as planned to rejoin his friends from a hunting trip 30 miles east of Ketchikan in the vicinity of Wilson Arm Saturday at 1 p.m.

Lt. Andrew Hoag, commanding officer of the Coast Guard Cutter Naushon, left on a hunting trip with two friends and did not return to camp Friday night as expected. A fellow hunter departed the camp Saturday morning to reach an area where communications are possible and placed a Mayday call. The call was received by a vessel in the area and reported to the Alaska State Troopers who notified the Coast Guard.

Hoag and two others were hunting at an elevation of 2,500 to 3,000 feet and last communicated around 2 p.m. Friday.

Several members of the KVRS rescue squad were transported by a Temsco helicopter from the Ketchikan area. The Coast Guard Cutter Liberty was diverted from a routine patrol. Once on scene they will be transporting rescue workers to and from the search area as well as conducting comprehensive shore line searches.

Hoag is reportedly without signaling devices, sleeping bag or tent and is wearing a short sleeve shirt with rain gear. He is also reported to have water and an ample amount of food.

The aircraft and ground search parties will continue to search Sunday morning weather permitting. The search area is a four-square-mile area.

The Liberty is a 110-foot patrol boat homeported in Auke Bay, Alaska.

Wilson Arm is in BEHM Canal. It is a remote off shoot of Smeaton Bay, which is just below RudYard Bay, Misty Fjords Nat'l Monument. Very steep and rugged territory.

Great that he's all-right, but Andy is never going to live this one down. Big Grin

A cutter CO requiring a SAR sortie, plus the added discomfiture at being rescued by a sister cutter on a SAR prosecuted by your own Sector. Eek

My USCG sources tell me that this officer has a great sense of humor though. He's going to need it for the rest of his tour in the SEVENTEENTH. Angry Whip

My USCG sources told me of an officer onboard MAPLE (homeport, Sitka) who had his own SAR case after going on a hike approx 4-5 yrs ago. Cool

although not as near serious in the potential outcome as this case I am reminded of a case, many years ago (1975-76 time frame) when, Group/Air Station Cape May received a report of a capsized sail boat in Cape May Harbor, launched not only a boat from Station Cape May, but an HH52A from Airsta Cape May. Arriving on scene both sailors were vehemently declining any assistance, having righted their boat and reset the mast and sails.

Of course we all got into the act of recognizing (at the change of command for CAPT Larry Kindbom) LT Fred "Splish" Galloway and LT Cliff "Splash" Vogelsburg, both pilots at AIRSTA Cape May, who flipped Fred's 12' saiboat in the harbor while sailing one day. The ASM, Dizzy Dalzell made 2 sashes out of pink flourescent nylon and sewed upside down BSA Sailing Merit Badges on them and I modified two SAR Aircrewman Certificates into SAIL Crewman Certificates...everyone but Fred and Cliff had belly splitting laughs on that one.

All the more reason why Surface Force confines his activities inside the city limits to such establishments as the Sourdough and the Arctic Bar whenever he happens to be operating in that AOR in support of the CG. Cool

District One A/S about four years ago we had two incedents, one a LTJG and another a PO2 both (seperate instances) run into trouble and require Coast Guard assistance...

Every one gets lost at one time or another bush wacking the through the alders and devels club of south east Alaska. If you not getting lost, your not out there. Whats not funny is losing your boat amoung the many small small islands while out exploring.
