I am wondering if there are any units out there that are doing anything special for 9-11. An all-hands morning colors or someone reading the ALCOAST? I am looking for some different ideas. Thanks.

Not sure yet. Instead of honoring our fallen Americans like we do on December 7th, we're supposed to plant a tree or wash a window like some sort of half-assed Earth Day.

I guess that is one of the major bennies of being retired. Now that I am a "unit" all to myself I can tell POTUS to take his personal political agenda and pack it where the sun doesn't shine. I will be flying my flag, thinking of the victims of his radical friends, and praying for our troops who are deployed to fight terrorism (NOT on an "overseas contingency operation").

Were 8 years post 9-11, and its sad to see how many people have forgotten that day already. Its like a footnote in their busy schedule. Hell, this thread only pulled in 4 freakin replies when a member asked what he could or should do for a memorial service. FOUR? Only four members have an opinion on this topic?

The first year we all had a minute of silence. The next year the minute of silence took too long so it was dropped all together. How about an all hands message from the Commandant with some guidance? I hope he didn't forget.

Eight years really isn't that long ago folks. I see few if any US flags flying in front of homes anymore. I see the occasional faded "September 11th" bumper sticker on a passing vehicle. Oddly enough, semi trucks seem to carry the most memorial stickers. Perhaps a little more patriotism with those guys, I don't know.

While Sept 11th was certainly one of the worst days in this countries history, the months following were some of the best in my opinion. Americans acting like Americans. They cared more about strangers, and were proud of their country. It mattered not that you were a Dem or Republican, you were American. They didn't make a big deal out of the smaller trivial issues.

And here we are today. Four people have advice on how to remember that day.

Tony, I think you're being a little hard on folks. Since that day, America has become the ‘bad guy’ and the Muslim Extremists have become a protected class. It is now evil to even have a concern about any Muslim… even when they have ties to extremists.

The American response to those horrific attacks is now considered a ‘wrong war’.

Why are people not replying to a good question? Confusion… they might be afraid that their words will be held against them. Maybe if they write what they really want to write they will violate the TOS and thus, remain silent.

Personally, I shall do what I always do. Respectfully observe a moment of silence, head bowed in prayer for those harmed – directly or indirectly – that day.

Dis

What I would like is for us to stop worrying about what everyone else thinks. Do whats right, and move on. Its not rocket science.

As far as the TOS stuff, thats just a bunch of nonsense now.

Well then, I'm retired and don't belong to a unit but I think I just might drive up to Norfolk and take a leak on the side of the mosque at 35th Street while I say a Hail Mary for the victims of 9-11 and their families.

I'm sure the people in that Mosque were the real culprits. Roll Eyes

I wonder if the reason for the lack of replies is that we "celebrate" too many things already? What is/did your unit do for (insert heritage/celebration observance month here)? If nothing else I'll remind my crew of the attack and the impacts it has had on all of our lives. I'll also let them know about the hideout on 35th street in Norfolk and the planned urination salute!

As one of those who observed that horrific event from my office window and to be called to Active Duty within hours of the towers collapsing, I have very definite feelings about Sept. 11th's going forward. I think the media should run the entire attack on a continuous loop throughout the day to comemerate the day. We should fly our flags at half-staff and re-count what we did on that day. I believe “a day of service” only serves as a distraction from the “whom”, “why” and “how” of those that truly hate our very existence. We have become complacent and lazy in our national attitude toward homeland security in general and terrorist threats specifically. When we normalize relationships with those who seek our destruction, we play directly into their hands. When the POTUS has senior advisors and staff that actually believe we did this to ourselves and who think terrorists have constitutional rights, you know we have drifted way off course…

Thats a good image of the USCG. Racist, confused, xenophobes. Good for you.

Yes, god forbid we take a national day of mourning and use it to give back to our communities. And I imagine you're right, the Midle East hates for the sole fact that we are free. It probably has nothing to do with the years of imperialist meddling in every region of the world.

My unit will do what we do best. Patrol the waters of the US to ensure that it doesn't happen again. And sing happy b-day to the old man.

Imperialist meddling?? Or responsible super power. One of those comes with the requirement to act, and not talk a good game.

We will be doing an all hands morning colors followed by a moment of silence @ the time when the 1st plane hit. I have a 90 min DVD on the events that I'll loop in the training room all day for people to watch in passing. The purpose of this is 2 fold. 1st: Honor those who were lost. 2nd: To remind the crew to never be complacent and forget what WE (our country as a whole) went through that day. Being from NY and having family in NYPD, FDNY and EMT, it has definitely changed my life forever. Politics aside, I am concerned that we have forgotten how we all felt that day and how we all came together regardless of differences. I couldn't have been prouder to be an American the following weeks after 9-11. I couldn't watch a ball game without getting choked up. The CG is now a different service because of these events. For those that provided input, thank you. For those on watch, take care and be safe shipmates. Thanks again.

No unit, but I will be spending the day mourning the loss of the 9/11 victims. And I will be celebrating the rescue activities of emergency responders that day, including Fire, Police, Coast Guard and everyday citizens. I will also, though not without some doubts, be supporting the efforts of the current Administration to continue anti Al Qaida efforts in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
