Just wanted some opinions on this:

I am wondering if there is a policy on how far away a units designated smoking area has to be in relation to where people conduct business?? What if your CO is a smokey joe, and youre not. What if they authorize everyone to smoke all over the ship? Or at a station, all over the boats and boat docks or in front of the station door? Does that mean everyone is doomed to walk around in a cloud of second hand smoke all the time??
I personally dont smoke, and I dont care if others want to smoke. But I dont want to be trying to make my way into work and be cutting through the smoking gang. This is all hypothetical, i dont have this particular problem at my unit. I work on a big sector where theres only two butt huts and they're out of the way of foot traffic. Does anyone know of any pubs or directives that shed light on this?

Im not trying to bust any smoker chops, FYI. Cool Im just nosey and wanna know.

Thanks!

I remember the old days when someone was referred to as smoking it meant he was turning too and getting the job done. Just like that four letter word you used in your Subject line is no longer used by me now that I am in retirement. Such words are never permitted in my home as they are too distressing and may disrupts my continplating the next days fishing or golf.

Key points are:

Where conflicts arise between the rights of non-tobacco users and tobacco users, the rights of the non-tobacco user shall prevail.

No use in GV's

Designated tobacco use (smoking and smokeless) areas will be away from entrances and exits and will not be located in areas commonly used by non-tobacco users. Designated areas must be a sufficient distance away, approximately 50 feet, so as not to allow smoke to be drawn into the indoor facility through door openings, windows and air intake units/vents.

CO/OINC policy on small boats.

Your unit SOP should cover smoking. Not all units are up to regs. One of smoking areas I use on base is within 50 ft of 2 doors, and about 15 to 20 ft from a natural gas line.

Not sure smoking is the biggest hazard to your health mate. That natural gas line is a threat bigger than smoking.

As a non smoker, I use to hate sitting on any of the Rec-Decks of the Chase. I'd guess that 70% of the guys smoked.

I started during a divorce five years ago but I try hard not to smoke around any non smokers. I don't even smoke in my apartment or truck so as to keep it from my son, plus, I still hate the smell afterwards.

I started smoking when I was about 12, so I can't blame the CG. I SAID I was quitting about 4 or 5 times while I was in the CG, but I wasn't really ready to quit, so that went nowhere. When cigarettes went to $15 per carton at the commissary, I started really thinking about it (& switched to rolling my own) When my company banned smoking in the offices around 1985, I think, I quit cold turkey.
I am not bothered by people smoking around me, and was joining groups in the smoking area for breaks soon after I quit. I have always felt that the extreme anti-smoking people irritate people so much that their campaigns are counter-productive. (In fact I would probably have quit sooner than I did but for the grotesque displays of disgust by a certain co-worker who was, herself, a former smoker).

It's worth a try though isn't it? You go ahead and get pregnant again and we'll see if that just doesn't do the trick for eaclark.

And let me know if you need any help with that because I'm always willing to help a fellow Coastie in need. No job too big or too small. Call me. OK?

That's Hilarious! Beer

I'm not sure how or why, but I was ready to quit smoking when I had foot surgery in March. Been smoking for most of my CG career and the 7 years since retiring. Quit for about 4-5 years when I had my children, but divorce brought it all back. When I had surgery, I had to go under, and after that, I didn't pick them back up. Don't know if it was the anesthesia or the pain meds for 4-5 days that got rid of the "urge," but I'm glad! Especially since a name brand pack runs $7.+ in Maine these days!

Onboard MIDWAY during WESTPAC 72-73, SeaStore Cigarettes were $1.10 a carton, all day long.

I started smoking when I was 15 and stopped back in 1994. If you want to quit smoking, I mean, no longer smoke again, then do what I did; it really works, I guarantee success. Pay attention; I will say this one time and only one time.

First, ask yourself this one question; if the answer is yes (honestly yes) the proceed to the next step.

OK, so you really do want to quit. I should charge everyone a dollar for this; considering how much money you will save. OK, since you really do want to quit smoking - quit. Cold Turkey, don't put it in your mouth and you won't smoke it, I guarantee it...no, really, I garantee it.

Any questions? It works. If you really want to quit, try my way for 4 weeks. Then you can send me the money!!!

I think folks are over reacting to what was obviously a joke, and a pretty mild one at that.

Interestingly enough, YN 102, the person that posted immediately after the joke, deemed it hilarious.....and YN 102 is also a female.

You kind of opened the door for a joke response with your post:

I just think folks are getting a bit thin skinned these days.

Folks, I should not be over here doing anything. I looked at a triangle and saw Point-Counter Point and assumed I was in my area.

I was wrong in what I said and did because it's not my area to watch or do any kind of IP burning or warnings.

I am sorry for jumping in here.

Nobody told me to say anything. I just got caught up in the too many triangles and e-mails to catch up with.

Again, I am sorry for butting in at the Coast Guard Board.

It's not about being thin skinned it's about rules and laws. There was nothing wrong with MK2's post, Anusaurus_Rex's however can be considered sexual harasment. It don't take 1 female thinking it's funny to make it ok, and all it takes is one person to be offended male or female.
