Hey everyone,

I'm originally from Pittsburgh, and at some point I would like to do a tour there, but being that I'm a cook, it seems unlikely that I'll get the river tender there. So my only other option would to go recruiting. But the only way I'd want to do that is if I would be guaranteed that billet. Do you get a chance to pick your location prior to getting the quals/recommendations?

You do get to put in an e-resume, just like any other transfer. However, if you are choosing recruiting to try and get a particular city or office, I would recommend not putting in for it. To begin with, an opening would have to exist at that particular office. On top of that, out of all the people picked up for recruiting that year, I'm sure that others would put in for the same office. You don't get to the billet selection stage until after you have been released from rating. Therefore, there wouldn't be any guarantee of a geographical location.

If you are going to put in for recruiting, please do it because you really want to do the job, not to try and get to somewhere in particular. You can't succeed in the job if you are miserable. It's a fantastic job, but it requires a positive attitude to do it well.

As someone who just went through the process I can tell you it won't work like that. You put in for recruiting because you want the job. The location just comes with it. There's no way to tell if that billet will be open or not, even if it's up for rotation current recruiters would get a shot at it before you would. Then you'll be up against other selectees and their priorities versus yours. I got nothing on my dream sheet, just the way it happened, I'm still happy to go to the job though because that's what I wanted. Good luck to you though.

Justin, First thing you need to do is change your profile.. it says you are still in the NAVY..

You say "I'm originally from Pittsburgh, and at some point I would like to do a tour there, but being that I'm a cook, it seems unlikely that I'll get the river tender there."

Why don't think you could get aboard OSAGE?

I think you would enjoy a tender more that the recruiting office job.. (just my opinion)

Wray... Cool

Justin; The only land billets I had in 28 years was recruiting and The Chief's Academy in New London. Most recruiters are Airdales and Yeomen, you know the one's that know most about life onboard ships in the Coast Guard.

I agree with Wray on this. I know a MK3 who was on the Osage and he loved it. Nothing aginst Recruting (what we used to call professional liars) but why not stay in rate and better your chances of advancement? Either way hope it works out for you.

Very true, and most of them have over 20 yrs of service. I think the average age of a recruiter is like 37yrs of age. Some are dang dinosaurs that have made a career out of it..I did 4 yrs in recruiting and the vast majority are airdales, storekeepers, and yeoman..we have several E-6 over 20yrs in recruiting...

I stuck out like a sore thumb with my permanent cutterman's pin..

The best way to pick up your next pay grade is to stay operational...

In my opinion, of course.
