On Friday, April 11, 2008, the USS Typhoon was approached to within 200 yards by a small Iranian craft, outside Iranian territorial waters. According to Associated Press reports, the Typhoon fired a flare as a warning, then continued on its course without further incident. This is the second such incident that has occurred between US Navy ships and Iranian craft this year[1].
Navy with a CG LEDET onboard. They have approached the 110's and ran just like they did here. This is not the first time they have approached a Navy PC either. Its only a matter of time until they get too close and suffer the consequences
TYPHOON is a Patrol Coastal being operated by the Navy. The Coast Guard does have a number of PCs leased to us by the Navy, but none of them are in the Middle East.
I don't know if we gave them back, but as of 2002 we had at least 2 of that class under our (CG) responsibility. I could swear the "Typhoon" was one of ours.

Chief45,
As I noted on another "board": The USCG is currently operating PCs Tempest, Shamal, Monsoon, Zephyr & Tornado; but not the Typhoon. The Typhoon has been based in Bahrain since 2004. The USCG evaluated the Thunderbolt for a short time as well.
FYI: The PC-1's over there (four, I believe) are Navy owned and Navy crewed. However, they work for Commodore, PATFOR SWA (USCG).
As to the original question, this issue has been hashed and rehashed (not that ever stopped anyone on this site!). The CG operates on a different footing over there. I suppose the best way to explain it would be if you have two people walking down a dark alley, and one is alert the other shuffling along, which one is likely to get robbed? Is it possible the alert person will meet with some foul fate? Sure.
There's a certain BM2, USCG which stared down the Iranian Revolutionary Guard (almost exact same situation), and the IRG backed down.
Our guys know what they are doing. Is it dangerous? Sure. Can they get hit? Of course they can. Are our guys (and gals) better prepared to defend, protect, respond to a situation like this? You bet your bottom dollar it is!
"How much longer will it be before our own CG WPB's are approached in the same manner?"
They did it to BOUTWELL in 2003 right after the war started- sent us to GQ, literally, and after that they tried it again a couple times. I can only assume they've been doing it all along. Erik
Please watch your response to this post. As much, as I'm against censorship. I'm also worried about possible OPSEC, and freedom of information act violations.
I'm not sure if I see possible violations. But please be careful...
Actually if I remember correctly they have come close before as well as approaching the oil platforms to get a rise out of us. There was an incident when I was underway where a small boat entered into the exclusion zone and was making a beeline towards the paltform. They constantly looked back at us and saw us in pursuit. They changed course at the last minute apparently realizing that we weren't serious about stopping them.

Yeah, wouldn't want to read it here first before seeing it on CNN's ticker..

We werent serious about stopping them???? Why do you say that?
I can say that during my time there, we were serious about stopping any credible threats to the platforms..... We were not "window dressing" or "in no hurry to engage the enemy" and I do find that to be an insult to our men and women who are out there doing the job. I don't think there are any who take it lightly.
