Just seen this article about the Marines banning their folks from the popular social networking sites ....

A few times I wondered if this site (Mil.com) would get banned as an ops security risk.

Marines ban social networking amid Pentagon study
By PAULINE JELINEK (AP) – 4 days ago

WASHINGTON — The Marine Corps is banning its troops from going onto Facebook, MySpace and other social network sites, citing a possible security risk.

The corps issued an order Monday saying the ban is effective immediately on the Marine Corps computer network. It said the Internet has been used as a haven for malicious behavior, and said that using social sites can expose information to adversaries.

The Associated Press has learned that the move is part of a larger Pentagon review. Deputy Defense Secretary William Lynn last week ordered a review of both the threats and benefits of using social networking — and asked it be done by the end of the month.

The order doesn't effect Marines' private use of such networks on personal computers outside of their jobs.

how about e-bay?

When you say "banned" do you mean you are prevented from getting on it?

I think there are two issues being addressed.

1) Protecting the military's networks from being hit by viruses caused by military folks using their computers on the gov't networks.

2) OPSEC.....too many people getting on line and sooner or later someone will pit the wrong info out there.

When I was in Iraq we had set up MWR facilities for the troops there that used a completely separate network from the official one. Maybe that will still be allowed.

Most all the civilian social networks are banned on CG Networks. Kind of odd because the CG posts on at least a couple of them.

EBay is also a no-no...as with peer to peer, live-chat, IM-ing, dating sites, hotmail, etc.

I guess the CG was ahead of the Marines on this one. However in this case, it's kind of tough for the deployed folks to stay in touch with the family back home.

Just a couple months ago, I read a news article on here. It cited an OPCEN-type OS as using facebook to locate and confirm the well-being of a person reported as OverDue on the water.

How did he get access, as the site is blocked on the SWS?

Our Executive Director banned FB and MS at work beyond our Agency FB, when she found out how many people were on it for extended periods of time during work hours. Kind of a no-brainer if you're paying people to work, not chit chat all day.

I'm glad the military can connect with their families while away now! But OPSEC, Loose Lips, and Viruses are three good reasons for it to be blocked on official computers, and wait til you get to the Cyber Cafe after work.

I agree in certain cases like if on duty, but I'm concerned because my Dad is going to be deployed, so this might keep us from talking as much if he couldn't use the networks. I think it might make it hard on families.

Spoken like a man that never spent a year away from his family. I spent a year in Iraq and the troops used those sites to communicate with those at home.

Kinda hard to get to the cyber cafe in the middle of the North Atlantic.

C'mon. Like the backbone of the internet is Facebook, MySpace, or Twitter.

While a friend was deployed in Gitmo, I set up four computers in my house, with video camera's, so his family could see and chat with him on a private room in yahoo chat. Well, as private as yahoo chat allows.

Unfortunately, the audio portion wasn't setup at gitmo so they couldn't hear him.

Yes, it would have been great to have this technology when I served, but, there are still area's one must be concerned when OPSEC can be violated.

Obviously not, but those three are tools the troops do use to communicate with their familes.
