Remember the old saying "those who can do, those who can't go to HQ"

Funny you mention that Wray, while I was at the CPO Academy just recently, there were many E-7 to E-9 that said "E-10 fill in blank" GUNS |

Thats right. So don't be surprised GUARDIANS if your new nickname becomes "Gardie" or "Garder" or some other variation of a one or two syllable name. |

I would love to ask the old timers here - Has "Shipmate" ever been a widely used term during your time in the CG? It seems as if I have heard this term used in the CG the past couple of years. I do not recall this term ever being used at boot camp or at my first couple of units. ADM Papp uses this term all the time. Did I miss something in boot camp early on or is this another example of a term being shoved down on Coasties to use. A Guardian/shipmate will bail you of jail, BUT, a Coastie will be sitting next to you saying, Damn, That Was FUN!" |

Did a multi-day boat patrol WAAAY the hell up the Pascagoula River ... got out of the boat one day at a little dock, and I heard "George! Get the guns ... it's the Revenuors!"

During 11 + years of sea duty and 9 years of shore duty I never called anyone "shipmate", "coastie" or "sailor". I used last name or first name. It's not as if the crews were too large to not know individuals by name. Besides, a squared-away CoastGuardsman had his name stenciled on his clothing.

I would have a Strong opinion on this but for my "reverence for that long line of expert seaman.." now if I were just a "shield" id probably talk myself right into trouble...
Good on all of you still active or retired (old and tired) Coastguardsman or Guardian, the job is still absolute servitude for the public good. there is still nothing more noble. |

"This is not my fathers Coast Guard"
The Commandants statement back in Feb 2007, looks like he's kept his word. A date for establishing the "new Guard". |

Since they keep trying to re-invent the CG maybe you should have referred to it as the "newest Guard"! |

It would appear that the moniker "Coastie" is alive and well within certain members of the publishing community:
Here's an article from Wired, a magazine put out by Condé Nast Publications and deals with how technology affects culture, the economy and politics: Coast Guard Losing Arctic Race From the article: "For the federal agency that should be in charge of much of our Arctic affairs, the Coast Guard, has been busy elsewhere (Africa, anyone?) -- and, anyways, lacks the appropriate equipment for Arctic ops. "The Coast Guard presence in the Arctic historically has been episodic and superficial," Rear Admiral Gene Brooks, top Coastie in Alaska, said during a Pentagon teleconference yesterday. Alaska is the natural base for U.S. North Pole ops, but Coasties are all concentrated along the state's southern edge, rather than on the North Slope, where the action is." (Emphsis mine.) The term "Coastie" is used 2 or three more times in this article. One question not related to the article but to the topic at hand and in particular, to a comment by the MCPOCG. Since we Radiomen, then the TCs and now, OSs I assume, were in charge of mail ops onboard the cutters, could we rightfully be known by the moniker "Post Coasties"? mw |
