I'm bringing this up, b/c I'm suprised no one else has yet.

I'll start off by saying that I hope the CG saved a lot of money by switching to this substandard, usesless excuse for a physical. If not, then I salute them anyhow for stimulating the economy by paying the civilian doctors to not do a darn thing!

I am approximately 4 months into the process... and still dont have my "results". If we're expected to do this every year (your birth month) then prepare to be constantly dealing with this the rest of your career.
It started back in early Feb when I got orders overseas (the 49th state, why a state in our country is such a big deal I dont know, not like its kansas) I logged in online and took that rediculous survey stating that i'm overweight, eat like crap, and drink too much... ie. good health / high risk... whatever Roll Eyes I then call the hotline and they schedule me an appointment with a civilian doc, earliest appt APRIL! Eek A little down the road but not bad since I'm not departing unitl June, sounds good.

April:
I head to the doc after a long midwatch, they check my temp, and BP ...good start... then they stand me infront of a 20/200 vision chart.... this tipped me off that they havn't yet seen my medical record b/c I see a wonderful uncorrected 20/400. She tells me to read the smallest line I can... and I tell her I cant see anything... she got an attitude with me... like its my fault.. Mad
A half hour later I meet the Doc. He goes over my PHA and councels me on my redmarks. Tells me i'm over weight (25 lbs under MAW) and that I should eat less cheese b/c I might have high colesterol, doesn't check it... just tells me to look out. Thanks doc Roll Eyes
And i'm done, thats it. 2hrs, checked my temp and BP and told me i'm overweight... but not to worry about it.

Now approaching 1.5 months after my "physical" and about 6 days before departure still no paperwork. No one knows how to get it or who to call. We just have to wait for it to magically appear.

All in all, this whole process is a failure, I hope there really was a outside the box reason for this and not just to spice up an OER.

Anyone have thoughts on this?

I found the PHA easy and hassle free (and no, I'm not an HS).

Lineinthesand,
Would you venture out to say that they conducted a worthwhile exam? The way I see it is i'm not a doc... I dont know if something is "not right" with my body. I like the idea of the 5 year physical, to have a doc examine me make sure i'm good to go for the next 5.

Do MKs do PMS or do they just check the guages? Sometimes you have to dig around to find a problem.

Even the civilian doctor during my PHA said that it was a joke and waste of taxpayer money!

To dig you must have a hole. I for one do not want a doctor DIGGING around.

Getting ready for my physical.....

Brechty,
I hate to interrupt a perfectly good rant - but, my understanding of PHA's are that they are mandated by congress - not something the CG dreamed up (maybe an HS in the know can enlighten us?)

I went to the same place as Brechty to do my PHA and experienced the same things. My hearing test consisted of a nurse standing behind me rubbing her fingers together next to each one of my ears, and then asking me if I heard it.

OK, it sounds like the people having issues are those that have to go to a civillian doc, correct? If that is the case and it is indeed taking 4 months to complete the PHA, then you need to contact your nearest CG clinc and speak with the clinic supervisor (I beleive that would be E-City for you guys in N.C....).

As far as why we are doing the PHA... well, every other service has been doing these for a few years now and it's worked out OK for them. You know your body better than anyone else, if you feel something isn't right then it's your responsibility to let the doc know (notice all the you/yours in there? take some ownership) By looking at your weight/blood pressure/etc during a PHA, a provider can tell a lot about what may be going on with you... It's not like the civilian sector where you're dealing with severly out of shape, overweight older peoeple, we should already be a pretty health workforce to begin with.

As I said, if you feel your civillian provider is not giving you what you need, you need to contact your nearest CG clinic.

did you hear it? if so, you are good to go...

Now, if you are on the OMSEP program (or should be) due to noise exposure, then you would have to have a full audiogram. Just becuase something is different doesn't mean it's the wrong way to do it...

brechty first read the alcost 118/09.

The PHA is not a physical it is a periodic health assesement and if you had read allcoast 118/09 you might have seen

5. ALTHOUGH THE PHA HAS REPLACED THE ROUTINE 5-YEAR PHYSICAL
EXAMINATION, IT IS NOT AN ANNUAL COMPREHENSIVE PHYSICAL
EXAMINATION. THE PHA IS A PREVENTIVE HEALTH SCREENING. PER REF A,
ALL MEMBERS MUST BRING THEIR COMPLETED FLEET HEALTH RISK ASSESSMENT
(HRA) AND, IF PRESCRIBED, TWO PAIRS OF GLASSES. WHITE SPACE MEMBERS
SHOULD ALSO BRING THEIR PHA KIT, BUT SHOULD NOT BRING THEIR HEALTH
RECORD. AT A MINIMUM, A MEMBER SHOULD EXPECT THE FOLLOWING:
A. REVIEW OF THEIR FLEET HRA AND DISCUSSION OF THE MEMBERS
GENERAL HEALTH STATUS AND HEALTH RISK BEHAVIORS (E.G. SMOKING, LACK
OF EXERCISE, ETC.).
B. BLOOD PRESSURE CHECK.
C. VISION SCREENING.
D. REVIEW OF ANY MEMBER DIVULGED HEALTH CONCERNS AND ASSESSMENT
OF EXISTING CONDITIONS.
E. ADDITIONAL SERVICES MAY INCLUDE UPDATING A MEMBERS MEDICAL
READINESS (E.G. HIV TEST, IMMUNIZATIONS, ETC.), PERFORMING AGE AND
GENDER SPECIFIC CLINICAL PREVENTIVE SERVICES REQUIREMENTS (E.G.
CHOLESTEROL TEST, PAP SMEAR, ETC.). FOR WHITE SPACE PERSONNEL, HIV
TESTING WILL BE PERFORMED BY EXISTING LOCAL COAST GUARD PROCESSES

So are you saying because I heard it I am good to go, or are you saying that I should be on the OMSEP program (not sure what that is) and should have had an audiogram?

-----------------------------------------------

Regardless, the whole process to me was a waste of my time. At first, I gave the place the benefit of the doubt since I was one of the first Coasties that had been in this partucular clinic to do the PHA. I just figured they were working out the bugs. But then Brechty told me about his experiences during his visit to the same clinic. That's wehn I knew something wasn't right.

I could have easily filled out the assesment online, walked over to my clinic on base, had them rub their fingers behind my ears, read the same line on the eye chart four times (I had memorized it after the second time, and could have done it with my eyes closed), had my temp and BP taken, and had the HS1 tell me I drank too much, ate bad, ask me if my second cousin was an alcohloic, tell me that I didn't get enough sleep (I'm a watch stander at a Command Center, of course I don't get enough sleep, but the average civilian doctor isn't going to understand that) etc., etc., etc.
I think it's a complete waste of time and money to go to a civilian doctor just to have them read to me the results of my asessment that I had already read.

again- Have you called the E-City clinic and talked to anyone?

As far as OMSEP, if you are an OS then now you wouldn't need an audiogram. If you heard the finger rub, then you are good. As I said, DOD had been doing this for a few years now and everything has worked out fine for them...

I recently had my PHA and it was a joke. I've been in for 10 years and I think it was better only going in once every 5 years. It wouldn't surprise me if it was required by congress.

My concern is that this entire exam could have been conducted by my supervisor except for the eye exam. All they did was do height, weight, and ask me a few questions.

I can't even get the link to provide feedback that was provided in the message to work. Oh well...
