Hi all. Well I cant seem to find out the answer to this question. My husband tells me that he has not heard anything about having to get the swine flu vaccine but I know regular flu shots are mandatory in the CG so Im assuming this would be too... I am just concerned because I dont believe it is safe since it has not undergone enough testing.. If anyone knows anything about this, please let me know what you have heard. Thanks!

Jennifer

Thanks Jerry. The soapbox msg was the latest I could find.

If I only had $10 I would put it all on "YES" the vaccine will be manditory for Active Duty personnel......but I have been wrong before.

On the other hand it either will or won't be manditory, and worrying about it won't chang it...so why worry?

...And you probably won't. No INTERNET RELEASE AUTHORIZED on the bottom of it.

Have your husband check DTG R 221732Z SEP 09 for the message.

Fortunately for us in the Coast Guard immunizations are a condition of employment.

I don't see a message with that DTG. Was it an ALCOAST msg?

From what I've been hearing there should be plenty of extra shots to go around. All the medical personnel I've asked about the H1N1 shot are waiting until they see some data before recommending it. There appears to be no info being provided to them so they can explain the risk and or side effects.

Come back and let us know how things went.

Here is how this is going to work. Active duty will be vaccinated by service health. Dependents and others will have to go to their local primary care physician.

They are not going to use the normal tier process that we were thinking.

First responders must have direct exposure potential to be vaccinated on the first tier. One H1N1 vaccine is approved for those 10 and older. For those 6 months to 9 years, its two vaccines. For those under 6 months, its prohibited, which throws those who have a new born into the first tier. Pregnant woman are in the first tier as well. This virus has been targeting pregnant woman and no one knows why.

For a majority of the Active folks, it looks like around Dec that you will be offered the vaccine. The virus is widespread now and we are well into the dreaded second phase or wave of infections. 26 states are now reporting widespread flu activity and that is extremely rare for Sept/Oct. I am willing to bet that within the next month, you see one or more ships forced into Charley because of H1N1.

We were told on Tuesday to expect a 30% infection rate. That's some concerning numbers folks. Maryland alone had two pediatric deaths this week, and one of those was a healthy 13 yo girl who collapsed on the playground and died the next day from H1N1 complications.

There is a very severe form of this virus going around, and it targets the lungs. Its normal for this type of infection to take a healthy adult across the bar in 24hrs. Keep those hands washed folks. We are about to see first hand what a full blown pandemic does to our society. Thats a 100% certainty.

(Note) Its important to understand that an adult must have 28 days between vaccinations. You cant have the seasonal this week, and H1N1 next. For that reason, we are expecting the CDC to recommend all states and physicians begin shifting and concentrating on H1N1. If your going to get the seasonal, get it now.

Shipmate,
You have some good info but not all of it is CG policy. I suggest you add a caveat citing your source or opinion. ADCG folks should follow MSG traffic and talk with their supporting CG clinic for specifics.

If your talking to me, cite where I am wrong or move on about it. No one has time to screw around with innuendo, or goofy message traffic. People have questions so apparently the "message" isnt getting out.

My source? OPM, CDC, WHO, DOD, Phd. Who really gives a crap about whats CG policy when people are dying shipmate?

Militia,
Like I said you have a lot of good info but not all is CG policy. You have a strong message but it might confuse some folks.

"Here is how this is going to work. Active duty will be vaccinated by service health. Dependents and others will have to go to their local primary care physician."

This depends on where they are stationed. CG clinics, at least mine, are partnering with the local and state governments and will likely be vaccination sites for not only AD members and dependants but for all comers, regardless of military affiliation. AD members not co-located with CG clinics might very well get their vaccinations from their PCM.

The 28 day interval is somewhat correct depending on the type (mist or injection) of vaccine given and the prevalence/threat of H1N1. Decisions to vaccinate before the 28 day window are best made and recommended by docs.

There is a lot of disinformation out there, just read some of the posts on this thread. There have been umpteen messages and e-mails about flu. I encourage AD folks to check with their corpsman or CG clinic for additional and official guidance and GET YOUR SEASONAL FLU SHOT NOW.

You are absolutely correct!! Every bit of it. I think you bring up a few valid points as well. The vaccinations are area dependent. The point I was tying to get across with the 28 day issue is that people understand there is a waiting period between vaccinations.
