From another forum I habituate:

quote:
I thougt maybe you guys would be interested in this, but this morning the Icelandic costguard anounced that they have found what is belived to be the wreck of USCGC Alexander Hamilton in Faxafloi bay in sout west Iceland.
On a routine fligt patrol last month the crew noticed a oil spill which obviusly was not from any ship in the area. After bringing one of the Cost Guard ships in the area there was an object found on the deapt of 90 meters (300ft) which is belived to be the wreck of Alexander Hamilton and the oil is belived to be leaking from.
The next step is to bring an underwater camera down there and try to confirm this.
USCGC Alexander Hamilton was shot down by a torpedo from U-132 in january 1942 while escorting a conwoy, and was the first US millitary ship sunk after US declared war against Germany and Japan. U-132 was destoyed few hours later by deaptcharges.
Around 150 men, 50 of them burned and wounded was rescued from Alexander Hamilton by Icelandic fishing wessels.

Thanks, Tim for posting that & Grits for the link. 2 of my favorite posters! I hope the remains of CGC ALEXANDER HAMILTON is preserved and revered, and most importantly, protected undisturbed.
