in 1972, at the now decommissioned Coast Guard Radio Station at Point Higgins, about 8 miles north of Ketchikan, we had a mascot which was a ferrel tomcat which we named Stanley.

Nobody knows where Stanley came from. He just showed up and eat the scraps of food and bowls of milk left out on the porch of the station galley.

Our Commanding Officer was a CWO3(COMM) who wasn't very liked by the crew, especially the Radiomen. His favorite modus openandi was to muster the previous night's mid watch at about 0900 in the morning for drills. (I personally think that he would have been a lot happier deligating authority to his XO, a CWO2(COMM) and then going up to the station lake to do some trout fishing. But it was said that the CO dearly missed being out on ocean station patrolls and pulling all the military Mickey Mouse drills involved.

After a particularly hard mid-watch where we spent the night copying SOS signals from a 378 which had drug anchor and grounded itself not far from Dutch Harbor on Unimak Island, after being awaken at 0845 for fire drills, we decided to do the deed and that night, found the station mascot, Stanley, and locked him in the CO's office without benefit of a kitty litter box but with enough Friskies and water so he would go hungry.

The next morning, the CO found a couple of surprises on his desk blotter plus a deposit of cat urine on the previous day's radio logs.

His Yeoman reported that the CO drafted his retirement letter the very next day.

Sometimes, Coast Guard mascots can be quite useful creatures. By the way, after Stanley's night in the CO's office, we all chipped in and bought him a 1/4 pound of chopped liver and a couple catnip toys as his just reward. Wink

MAGGIE of the MACKINAW. She was at last part German Shepherd. She didn't like anyone. The MACKINAW returned her animosity in triplicate. The big problembeing, one could not seem to get rid of the other. No one seems to kmow or care exactly how long MAGGIE was aboard the MACKINAW

USCG Radio Station Washingon DC (NMH) had a mascot back in the early 60s -- a dog of unknown breed names "Sarge."

The picture below shows a dog I'm pretty sure is not Sarge. The picture was obviously taken in the mid to late 60s when the Honor Guard was quartered at NMH. Perhaps they had the dog pictured as a mascot. Not sure. . .

CGC STURGEON BAY's got a dog (the EOs dog) that goes on patrols with them, sleeps with the EO, and salutes for food. Good dog.

Thanks for the ideas to do some features on mascots of the past (not so sure about the roach??? unless someone has pix).

Definitely interested in mascots of the present, too.

Sturgeon Bay's sounds interesting.

You don't need pix just identify mascots. How will you find out if the ship has mascots or not?

I was on STURGEON BAY TAD, so I'm not there anymore, but this was only a couple of months ago, so the Schnauzer should still be there.

I agree though, dogs are great from morale.

I called into the Mark Levin Show about that dog from CGC STURGEON BAY and he sent me a signed copy of his book "Rescuing Sprite".

Side note: Mark Levin is a conservative radio talk show host who also loves dogs.

Stormer:
We're hoping some Active Duty or Reservists here will see our postings and send suggestions our way.

Got two possibilities already (Sturgeon Bay and New York) plus we already have three other submissions from across the country and two more webisodes in the can - Station Oregon Inlet and Station Mannistee - that we haven't published yet.

On MALLLOW, Buck got a pig from a friendly native in Kosrae. He stowed it in the foc'sle. He named him "Mr. Pink", lovingly after his 1st Lt. Our plan was to have "Mr. Pink" as the guest of honor at the next pierside libo party. Pig had other ideas and escaped. Ran all over the buoy deck and finally launched off the starboard buoy port. That initiated a "pig overboard" drill for the duty section.

Alas, the old man made Buck take the pig back ...

I don't know if Mr. Pink qualifies as a mascot ...

Shot an email out to the STURGEON BAY EO about his dog, Edgrr.

Seems like they might be interested, and he mentioned a good time would be the upcoming ice season on the Hudson R.

Woodrow W. WOODBINE; mascot for CGCWOODBINE for many years. Woody is buried at the CGC ESCANABA Memorial Park in Grand Haven Michigan..Coast Guard City. Woody had girl friends in numerous Great Lake ports. He had a bar tab at the local pub in Grand Haven , but was limited to two b eers a night. Had a dislike for khaki uniforms. He knew the ships whistle, regardless of what port, one long blast before getting underway would bring him on the run..great dog/great mascot.

We had some mascots in Sitka in my day but they walked the halls on two legs and became invisible when the brass was around. Wink

Yeah it was fun being one of the ship's mascots as it brought genuine morale to all from SR to the CO.
