Just got a call from a shipmate who is making Chief and getting transfered to Alameda. His orders came in last week with a reporting date of Dec. What the heck is going on there? While I do recall off season assignments for Hums or critial fills, when did the CG begin transfers during the Winter? In the middle of a school year?

Needs of the service comes to mind. Curious what billet he is taking and where the current filler stands.

A buddy of mine transferred to the Dallas in February a couple of years ago. I believe the billet (ET1) was open and it was pretty important to have someone in it. I believe they try to keep transfers in the summer months, but I also remember hearing a couple of years ago that there was no such thing as SPEAR season anymore. I never saw anything in writing on that though.

He is going to NESU as an MKC, and his wife is getting stationed on the Boutwell.

..that, advancement and I'd bet a desire to be co-located, are all things that can move things off of the 'normal' process.

PLEASE tell me that a member married to member is not complaining about having to leave early to co-locate. If they think they are getting the fid please have them call me, I'd love to hear their sob story and set them straight on how bad things can get. CWO Andersen |

I'm going through the same thing right now...I didn't actually receive orders until after I graduated from ACET...if your friend has enough leave that should give them a two month window...plenty of time for someone making CPO to get what needs to be done taken care of...I should know, I'm heading to an area with an 8 month waiting list for licensed child care facilities, I won't have housing until the week after I report, I had to find a suitable tenant for our house, and I most likely will get transfered if I make CWO in June...we are the military after all, and our moves may not be ideal...but that is known to all of us in uniform. If they are being colocated together that is better than many families who are split apart during transfer season and they should be thankful for that, there are many people that I know who cannot move their families with them due to the current state of the housing market. Just let your friend know that a report date in a month is not the worst thing that could happen to them...it is only an inconvience that will not last long. They will overcome this obstacle and move on to bigger and better things... Strat sends... |

Well, considering they didnt have a "sob story", or that I gave no indication that they had such a story, or that they were not complaining about being relocated early, and then throw in that I was asking out of my own curiousity, one has to ask. Do they have the "sob story", or do you? Why dont you set us all straight on how bad things can get. You signed as a CWO, and since we know that CWOs dont openly complain without presenting solutions, lets hear it. T |

For Michelle and your hubby, any barb wasn't pointed at you as you didn't start the thread.
Militia- you opened a can of worms for which no one has an answer. The needs of the service trump all and those of us who have "done our duty" and still can't reap any assignment consideration still salute smartly and turn 2. The only thing we can do, CWO or not, is raise the visibility that for better or worse the CG's policies IRT co-los stink. I have a sob story (vetted and validated by many) but the bigger message I hope to send is that our junior members watch what happens to their seniors. All too often I have been told by subordinates and peers that in order to maintain some semblance of stability they will not study, submit for special assignments or apply for Gold/Silver Badges. There are a lot of member married to members in the Coast Guard and how we apply old policies to a new workforce is being watched and judged by our future workforce- we are missing out on keeping and growing our own future. I certainly cant argue there. Its not just these issues the junior members are watching. T |
