Border patrol uses Drones

Did anyone else see this article? Seems the Border Patrol (a DHS Agency) has been using drones to combat illegals (people and drugs) for about 18 months. This technology could be of use in some of our missions could it not?
Seems like after a Drone has spotted a suspect vessel, a Ship could be dispatched to the smuggler's position, instead of turning fuel into heat, light and noise for weeks on end hoping to stumble across the suspected villains.

What do you think?

Why not use both and cover more area? I doubt those drones have the range of a cutter. If a suspect boat spots the drone and starts dumping bales, how long before a cutter is onscene? A day or two?

Unless it's a high tech drone like a Predator, it's not going to be able to track an aircraft flying on the deck towards the U.S. like a USCG aircraft would be able to. That's why I say, "use both".

OK...don't I feel stupid. "Read the ariticle, DON!"

I had just watched a story on CNN about the use of much less technical drones, being used on the SW border and assumed this was about the same type of equipment.

Sorry for jumping to conclusions without reading. Again....duh!

So maybe they can cut back on USCG aircraft patrols. I still say the cutters need to be out there. A drone could easily lose a target before a cutter arrives if any weather moves in.
