From a received E-mail today:

Greetings all

Back in November during the week of Thanksgiving, Mike Rowe from "Dirty Jobs" came aboard ASPEN and filmed a segment of our crew working a buoy. We were just informed that it will air on January 29th, a Tuesday on the Discovery channel. So, if you're not doing anything that night, be sure to tune in and watch this epic episode.

Spread the word about it too, not sure if a msg will go out in such short notice.

Sounds like a fun show. Razz Smile Razz Smile Applause Beer

congradulations as well! Look forward to seeing it. Applause I think it was Don who made the suggestion to film a bouy tender to the show producers.

Dirty job, do they have to 'jump' the bouy like they used to?

I have to say I am really envious of them. Dirty Jobs is one of my favorite shows and Mike Rowe is really hilarious to watch on that show. Can’t wait to see this episode.

What's the inside word? Is Mike gonna "Shoot the tube"? Maybe trip the chainstopper? Or perhaps end up covered in rubber cement and retro tape shavings? Glad to see this come to fruition, and the ATON side of the USCG get some well deserved recognition! -Jeff

Glad to see it will be airing soon. I tried to preprogram my sat dish for the show, but it doesn't not go out that far into the future.

...can't wait to see this one!

That has to be the most distracting Avatar I have seen yet. My eyes were all jacked up after staring at it.

I did make the suggestion on the Dirty Jobs website a while back but I think someone said it was kind of in the works already. Not sure.

Great to hear it will be on. I will be watching.

I never worked in ATON but my brother was on the CGC Hudson down in Miami years ago. His stories of the work are why I thought of it. He's now at the MSST King's Bay so I will let him know about the story.

I think the show would be pretty boring without Mike Rowe's sarcastic, dry sense of humor.

I will have to look for it. I love the show and if it has the CG in it, the show will be that much better.

Classic one Social, I love it!!! Heat-n-beat contests were a regular occurence on WLB-406 Acacia, the winner was usually rewarded with the next shift in the boom-shack! Looking back 20 years later I guess that dosen't seem like much of a reward, but anyone who's ever worked a bouy deck knows how precious a few hours running the boom can be versus lugging chain on deck in below zero weather, shooting the tube, or painting for hours on end can be, nevermind just wrestling those bit[hes around deck! -Jeff

The thing of beauty on a buoy deck was the control of a buoy on a hook in the open sea. Nobody, but nobody does it consistently better than the Coast Guard. With that cinched up hog line and all the crossdeck lines and tag lines, our buoys (usually) didn't stray far.

When I moved over to the civilian world with MSRC, I tried my best to get them to adopt CG methods for deck handling equipment in the slop ... nobody was interested, and with two 15-ton hydro cranes, they managed to bump a lot of stuff.

But even tho I was a snipe, I learned, from Hover and Ethridge and those guys workin' the deck. And I always think my guys did just fine, using the techniques you guys developed.

Some pretty good Heat 'n Beat shots in this YouTube video. Since these forums don't have provision for a YouTube video post here's a link: USCG Buoy Tender

You may also want to check this out: Now Hear This Deck Force to the Buoy Deck for some great shots of a 180's working buoys.

We never got to work the boom Frown

That was the GM3's job and ONLY his job. Well, actually I think my BM1 might have done it once in a while. We worked to get to sledgeman or lampman. I loved working the lamps. That was my favorite.

I also submitted that recommendation "quite a while ago" to Discovery Channel, but did not get a reply.

I simply figured it got lost in the shuffle.

This should be interesting and entertaining!
