Does anyone find it ironic that the new CG HQ is going to be located at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, a long time DC mental institution? Roll Eyes Razz Eek Big Grin

Apparently the plan is to build a complex big enough for all the DHS pieces.

So, next time a reorganization occurs and the CG, or some other entity, gets shifted out from under DHS will they need to vacate the building? Confused

Considering most, not all, of the staff there are zombies, its fitting I suppose.

Why doesn't the CG consider moving HQ to a area where the Cost Of Living Allowance is much lower? Imagine, instead of having 1,000+ personnel living in a lower COLA area, having a shorter commute, a nicer facility for the cost per sf to build than in the DC Metro area. Sure the senior staff (06+) may have to make the occasional trip into DC but then you would have less staff having to make that long commute, the CG would be spending less on COLA, it would (potentially) be a more attractive billet for enlisted and JOs, better schools for kids and a whole lot more pleasant environment for everyone, and let's not even talk about getting parking at the "new HQ." New address

5150 Straight Jacket Avenue

Parking will still be a nightmare....traffic getting in and out of the worst neighborhoods in DC. 75 of the 276 of DC homicides accured in that neighborhood.

In a good humored attempt to continue this thread (and no slight intended toward the hard working folks there...) I remember when Hurricane Isabel blew thru. That's when they had to relocate HQ due to flooding. The ALCOAST actually said that they where relocating because there where "rats and snakes" in the basement.

It took a hurricane to figure that out!? Heck, there have been snakes and rats in that building for decades! I thought that was a prereq for being assigned there.

The rats and snakes have all been consumed by the homeless.

And not a sucker blow to anyone who works at HQ at all. If any unit unit relocated to St Elizabeths there would still be jokes. And I am sure there are jokes being made by enlisted and Officer alike.

Do you think that is a pre-req for discussing stuff here?! Are you kidding me? We have selected commandants, MCPO-CG, decided on the next cutters, discussed budgetary issues, drugs in the CG, put missiles on boats and took them off again, realigned the coast guard to get ride of any number of missions, we have even gotten rid of the CG completely! We've gotten rid of ATON, LE, SAR and put it all back. We've put us in the Persian Gulf and pulled us out again. We've decided we aren't really a military service then decided we are after all. All ad nauseum... Just because any horse has been beat to death 97 times, doesn't mean it can't all happen again! We've decided if the MCPO-CG is an E-10, if we need an LE rate, and how horrible the new ODU is. Heck, I think about the only thing we haven't discussed (over and over and over!) is our favorite color! (Of course, that should be BLUE. So there's nothing to discuss.)

Funny thing is... I don't think we've ever solved a single issue or come to a conclusion or convinced anyone else of an opposing point of view.

Well, Excu.u.u.se me, but I haven't seen any discussion of your (or my) favorite SHADE of blue. I think that just MIGHT tell the whole story.

Rats and snakes in the basement? If nothing else at least we finally learned what it takes to get them off the phone and out from behind their desks.

Now to put this into perspective, Montgomery County, MD. Population 970,000 or two times what DCs is. Homicide rate? 15-20 a year.

What changes between the two to cause that?

But isn't SE DC closer to PG county and what is the homicide rate there?
