2-Alarm Fire Burns Coast Guard Housing In Alameda
ALAMEDA (BCN) ― A two-alarm fire at two U.S. Coast Guard housing units in Alameda on Tuesday night was controlled within a half hour and left about a dozen people displaced, according to fire Chief Dave Kapler.

The fire at 3064 and 3062 Kansas City Drive was initially reported just after 9 p.m., Kapler said.

The blaze was controlled by about 9:30 p.m. and was contained to the two duplex-style buildings, he said.

Kapler estimated that 12 people from the four affected apartments and one additional apartment were displaced and were being assisted by the American Red Cross, who was on the scene.

There were no injuries besides one report of smoke inhalation by a resident near the fire who was treated at the scene, the fire chief said.

The buildings sustained "fairly substantial damage," said Kapler, who added that it was too soon to access the value of the damage. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined but Kapler said it did not appear suspicious.

Anyone know if there is a fund set up for donations for the families? Or if they had renters insurance.

The red cross was on scene taking care of those affected. I heard one of the houses lacked insurance but i can't be sure. Haven't heard of any funds set up yet but I am sure they are in the works. Everyone was okay so that is what really matters.

Mil;
I just got an email from the MLC CMC. She said all of the folks are fine and are being taken care of. I know her personally and I know she won't be sleeping until the families are properly taken care of. She reports no significant need at this time for passing the hat. She can work her magic and would pass info throught he CPO Mess if things can't be handled through channels.

Thanks for the update guys, figured I would ask. I deal with Red Cross often for issues like this here in DC, and their services are nice, but leave some things to be desired. Glad to see its not that way everywhere.

Funny, you're in DC, and she emails you about the situation, why wouldn't she email the local chiefs mess with the info you passed ? Or better since she drives right by most of them on the way to work, stop in and TALK to 'em? Seems like a lot of Gold Badgers are email/ghost figures,it's like they can dish it out, but don't want to hear a chief on a 378 air a few choice opinions.......

I'm pretty sure the residents can put in a claim for damaged and destroyed property.

3 reasons to make sure whatever the hell your smoking is out and not still smoldering in the least. I wonder how many fires would never have happened if people just didn't flick there lite smokes in the grass, along side the road, bla, bla, bla. People only learn there lesson until something happens to them. I read today that the cause was attributed to a lit cigarette that was discarded off of an exterior deck. 5 housing units were affected and 12 people were displaced. We were lucky that there were no minor injuries (smoke
inhalation).

What a wiseass question that is. Is someone bitter that they couldn't get a second star? But here is your answer. Mil posted someting. The CMC is a close friend of mine, so I shot her an email and asked the question, and she responded.

I live 5 streets over from where this happened and had no idea until the next day that it occurred. Haven't seen anything from the housing office saying hey maybe we should be more careful. You go out at night and all you see are guys standing on their balconies smoking and drinking. Makes me glad I live in a stand alone unit.

Actually, Rolfy, that isn" t the answer. I posed the question of non-communicating with the local chiefs mess, and you posted about my last paygrade, and why she emailed you.....you answered neither...

Don't really care what they do with it, just wish it wasn't as vulgar and loud as it is. My kids have gotten valuable sex ed tips about hookers in Mexico and what anal is.

I'LL put a stop to this right now. Wiser - you nd MightyZ take it to e-mail and not on the disucssion. for the record WiserKaiser, MightyZ said he is a personal friend of the CMC, e-mailed her, and she replied to his e-mail. Clear enough for me; what say this petty BS just goes away?

WiserKaiser, your other issue sounds like your Chief of the Mess should be communicating with the CMC and discussing privately (via your *.mil e-mail addresses) the issues you seem to have with the CMC. Military.com, Point/CounterPoint isn't really the best media for discussion of your issues; thanks Senior Chief I am sure you will understand.

Back to the discussion; a carelessly tossed butt? Maybe the smoking lamp should be out in housing? When I retired in 2001 the first place I lived was a Townhouse Apartment. Our neighbors were none smokers, but 2 buildings over a carelessly tossed cigarette butt...scratch one whole building - 8 families - homeless because of the carelessness of some simpleton smoker...

Meanwhile, back on subject...

does anyone know if this fire was caused by smoking? There seem to be a lot of virtual fingers pointed that way.

and the initial report was the fire was in family housing, not UEPH. Was the fire started in UEPH, or were the people referencing UEPH, pardon the expression, blowing smoke?
