Anybody know what is going on with our military in Iraq and Afghanistan?

I haven’t heard any news about these places since the middle of January 2009.

Confused

Watch Fox. There is something about our boys and girls over there everyday. Today anew assualt against the Taliban was covered. There was also a discussion about 60+ servicemembers contracting the swine flu in Iraq. Last night an article about the changes n IRAQ and how it's affecting troop deployments and activities. The news is there.

A small item on the local morning news concerning some of our local NW Army units deployed to Afghanistan.

They are being encouraged to grow full beards to appear more agreeable to the locals. The beards will encourage co-operation between Afghanis and the soldiers. A more professional relationship.

Kind of funny, at one time an order was given that all Coast Guardsmen shall be clean shaven. In part of the edict that was issued it was implied that one could never be a military professional sportin' whiskers.

Could it be that the old man was starting an appearance over substance trend Eek, and the loss of whiskers had nothing at all to do with improving military professionalism. Roll Eyes Big Grin

Good observation! I think it's Greg Palkaut(sp) from FNC is currently embedded with a Marine unit right now in Afghanistan and providing frontline reports.

Unless a bomb goes off and kills a bunch of folks, I really don't recall hearing too much recently from Iraq.

Events in Iraq and Afghanistan are no longer newsworthy since they can't be used as a club to beat Bush and Cheney with anymore.

Far be it from me to get into that question . . .
My picture there was taken while I was on the Admiral's staff - CCGDOne(eee)

Of course, my own opinion when I first heard of the "beard ban" was that it was a case of a superior forcing his religion on ALL his subordinates.

Remember the day after the beard ban? Lot of unfamiliar faces.

Looking down in the sink and wondering WTFO. Gathered up all those whiskers, stuffed them in a baggie, sent them off to Buzzards Point with a note. " Whats next, this could get interesting. CWO3 Bosn D. Lewis, Boston."

About a year before we instantly became professional. Big Grin
