The hardest thing to believe about the story is that an 18yo Coast Guard member could afford a BMW..... Eek

(making a joke since it looks like no one was seriously hurt...on the serious side of it, he should get what's coming to him)

I recall that in 1982, an 18-year old recruit's parents were so happy that he was graduating from recruit training that they bought him a brand new Mercedes-Benz. At the time I was driving a 9-year old Chevy Nova. He became a gym instructor at TRACEN Cape May, so I used to see his Benz every time I went to the gym. As they say, "Life isn't fair."

My thoughts exactly...after reading the article, BMW and SN definitely stand out.

Maybe it's a 1975 BMW.

There was an E-4 at the Station here who was driving an Excursion (sp?) but had to go to the command for help because he "couldn't afford" the other bills. You know, like rent.

Regardless of whether this guy was driving a BMW, Mack truck, or ATV, why is this story worthy of Military.com posting on this site? Is there not any other story out there more worthy of representing our service? Does Military.com respect the Coast Guard or not? Certainly there are a number of stories every day where Coasties do something positive and worth posting on this site.

I wasnt going to say anything, but I thought the same thing. Not quite sure this qualifies as "news".

Senior:

Military.com did not post this. SacraficialMetal, a member, did.

It's not all positive, warm fuzzy, Kumbuyah in the CG.

I posted that an 18 year old Coastie might have gotten a 1975 era BMW while enlisted in the CG.

I know I had a 1965 Ford Taunus (NOT Taurus, but Taunus) while stationed in West Germany in 1978 for $50.

I owned it for about a year, never drove it, and sold it for $50 to a soldier with a family who needed a car.

I know about hand-me-down cars.

Like it or not, positive or negative, a P/CP topic.

Let the topic roll...

Jerry, the same link is on the main fredsplace.org page, under the heading "Today in the Coast Guard". Maybe that is why he said military.com posted it.

So, what is being said is that only positive things about the Coast Guard can be posted here?

Sounds like a bunch of PR crap to me.

We stand to always learn from the mistakes of other people, if we only pay attention and don't sweep the negative under the rug.

And now I'm driving a used '99 Ford Taurus (but at least I was able to pay cash for my two daughters' college educations).
