I'm pretty sure I remember reading or hearing that religious materials, such as bulletins for prayer meetings or church services, are not allowed to be distributed via CG networks. Anyone know a hard and fast answer on this one?
Not sure where to find the black and white answer, but I believe that the ban is for any soliciting. That applies to soliciting at work, and should extend to the workstation. However, it seems no different than an email letting you know that chapel services will be held at a certain time. If it really bothers you, you could always let the sender know and maybe they will take you off their email list.
Doesn't bother me persay, just struck me as odd, what with the emphasis on diversity and sensitivity in the CG. Mass e-mails with an un-inclusive subject line of "Mens Bible Study" is an HR complaint waiting to happen. In the command center I work in alone, we have Christians, Jews, one person whose spouse is a Muslim, and various levels of agnostic/atheist, and that is just the people I know.
Have any of those been denied the same opportunity? Seems to me that this is the more important question... Not whether someone might have been inadvertantly exposed to the word "Men" or "Bible" or (gasp!) "Study". But where they denied some opportunity that was afforded to someone else???
Yeah, so out of curiousity, I asked our HR guy offline (he's a buddy of mine) his thoughts on the issue. He said that as long as it's endorsed by a chaplin and screened by legal, and so long as others are not denied the same opportunity (as the person above aptly pointed out) than it's cool. Guess that makes sense.
Depends a lot on the content and even the sender. Probably the biggest (worst) issue I have had to deal with along these lines wasn't email, it was direct. The Major Command Commander, came into the watch floor during libo time with a big box of what he thought was an educational VHS material explaining the facts about the life and times of a certain carpenter. He went up to each individual, held out the tape and asked "would you like a copy of this movie? I bought enough for everyone." This was O-6 to E-4/5. Nothing but the best of intention from the senior. Of course, it was right around the time of year that is the common belief time of observing this carpenter's birthday. Placed unimaginable pressure for any of those folks who do not believe the CO particular sect's specific ideas about this person, or those who do not believe the stories surrounding his existance.
Everyone needs to understand that their beliefs are THEIRS.
I am a Christian. But I am certainly not offended by any of the jocular post here, calling on Tom Cruise, or Oprah, or Buddah, the Dahli Lama, Zeus or anyone else for assistance, comfort, or guidance. I may find it humorous, but I certainly don't find it offensive.
I just don't see it... Why do some people feel compelled to get all up in arms and get offended when they here the word "God" or "Jesus" or whatever?? Okay, fine you don't put any stock in it. I can see someone finding it humorous. But how can you be offended by something that doesn't exist? I just don't get that...
I can only speak for myself and although I don't believe in organized religion, nor do I get offended when someone "prays to God" or the like. In fact - a lot of my friends are religious and when I was going through tough times, they told me they'd pray for me. I didn't see it as an offense, in fact I thought it was kind of sweet and knew they were concerned for me as a friend.
JK, As a practicing agnostic... Well said! The things that bother me are the things that are not belief-based. what you believe is your CHOICE. Offering people different OPTIONS via the CG network doesn't seem like the most harmful thing we have to deal with. But...I have been wrong before...
Very well reasoned, thought out responses here. I would consider these to be reasonable responses. Heck, even if someone responded with amusement, I could understand. But anger? Offense? That I don't understand... All because they where inadvertantly exposed to some terrible, awful words??? Doesn't make sense...
