Wondering who out there might be in Grand Haven for the Coast Guard Festival. We'll be there covering the Festival for the Coast Guard Channel. It would be great to meet some of you after reading your posts day after day.
TAMCOM, If you get the chance meet with the Puddle Pirates at the Softball Tourny. Great bunch of guy's who have been going to GH for many years. I would be going myself but I'm in CA too, and the travel to long. If you have never been there before you will have a blast.
I was there 40 summers ago. Was great fun then and must be even better now. I can't even remember how many of my Academy classmates lost their [well you know what] during that visit. Have a great time this year!
I got a letter inviting me to the CG day picnic. Why not give Sector GH a call. I tossed it since I'll be at boy scout summer camp that week. But from the past ones, they've been pretty good.
Gee, Sector Grand Haven. I remember 1977 - 1979 Group Muskegon. About the only fun we had was to play softball in the tourney; at the time the Group supplied the Festival with active duty "workers"; some lucky fellows got to be escorts for the "Miss Coast Guard" Pageant though...
Hmmm, Sector Grand Haven; back in my day, at Group Muskegon, I was an SK2 and responsible for Supply Support from Pt. Betsie Lighthouse (still manned then) all the way down to Michigan City, IN. A few years ago I know the billet structure included an F&S and 3-4 SKs...ah the good life...
The Festival has grown in leaps and bounds; unfortunately I will probably be back to work by then and won't be able to make it there...have fun anyone who goes.
We won't be in Grand Haven but the opposite side of the state near Oscoda. We will tip a beer or ten in the general direction of Grand Haven on August 4th in honor of the CG birthday.
The plan is to visit CGC MACKINAW museum in Mackinaw City the following week. Then we'll tip a few beers there too.
Just so you or anyone else wants to know. I think it is $10 per person to get on the Mackinaw Museum and there is no discount for Coasties or wasn't as of the last part of May.

No, no discount. It's a big ship and a small community supporting it. Hell, the grass at the old RR pier wasn't even cut as shown in the pix my sister sent.
My husband I and went to Grand Haven many years ago. We had to pay for dinner tickets, get them at the chamber of commerce, walk up to where the dinner was. Adm Kime was there. Some came up and hadn't stopped at the chamber, the rest raised hell and they were 'allowed' in. The museum can be 'toured' without moving an inch. I'll never go to another one.
That's scary. Here's hoping our experience is better than yours was.
We've heard a lot of good things about it and are looking forward to ship's tours, getting to know some of the stations, and doing live remotes of the different events. Plus we've heard from Coastie friends that they'll be there so it's a great time to catch up.
I meant the festival NOT the Mackinaw. My husband was on her for years, we went to a reunion in 1989. Floyd said "no one will know me" When he walked up the gangway the skipper called through the loud hailer and said 'Mr Stormer repair to the engine room, your engines are smoking." that is the last I saw of him. Mackinaw City had the funds to make the MAC a museum Cheboygan did not.
I absolutly agree with troy67! Lots of good times and good memories down at CG fest!! Those "Puddle Pirates" are a good bunch of fellow's...I'd be there too, but I'm even more West and North of Cali...Long ways to go. Can't wait to get back to D9.

American Legion The memories of that place everyone got drunk and tried to outdo the other one with 'and that's the dyin' truth' stories I never laughed as much in a few hours.

My father finally recently got his cousin to sell him a quite rare 1880's cigar box from my great-great grandfather's Grand Haven cigar factory, "Cornelius VerBerkmoes Cigars" (me, my father, my grandfather, and my great-grandfather are named Cornelius VerBerkmoes too). My dad then loaned/donated that cigar box to the Grand Haven museum. Maybe it's already on display there? Let me know if anybody sees it.
