The Coast Guard was conducting a training exercise in the Potomac River moments before President Obama and his motorcade crossed a nearby bridge.

Coast Guard Chief Keith Moore said Friday no shots were fired as part of the exercise. Media reports suggested shots had been fired in the river.

Obama had traveled to the Pentagon for a ceremony commemorating the eighth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Could be bad timing for a training exercise? Wait and see. R

EDIT - UNAUTHORIZED HYPERLINK REMOVED

And I was just going to post this... Just turned on CNN, and they are not making us look good; more like a confused bunch of service members.

Not bad timing, but bad reporting. How about the news media, instead of trying to be the "First" to report, actually take a moment to confirm their "Information" before trying to beat the other guy to the punch.

CNN is ****ing me off trying to accuse the CG of screwing this up and that we need to apologize to American Citizens. Seems to me this screwed pooch is the work of the careless U.S media and there scanner.

Well Comms, your viewpoint is skewed because you have knowledge of how the Coast Guard operates. The rest of our society doesn't know much about our operations, and their source is a channel like CNN. When CNN says we made a bad decision, the rest of society sees it as the Coast Guard F'd up.

What?!?!? Really?? That would mean the Media was being responsible, not something I've seen in a long time. They want the CG to report to the media anytime they are going to conduct an excercise, really? How about just being responsible with their reporting and stop trusting their scanner.

CNN listened to the radio traffic?!?! really? I thought we communicated on secure radio channels and their scanners would not be able to listen in on.

They continue to say the heard the radio traffic! That is a bunch of BS!!

They actually just said they heard over the radio, bang bang bang bang bang, i mean the word bang, then heard the report that 10 shots were fired and STILL reported it. Really>?? They couldn't figure that out. WTF, the media owes the apology. Training is conducted nearly daily, the date shouldn't make a difference. Practice how, when and where you play.

CNN is also saying that Frances Fragos Townsend was a former Asst. Commandant?? I did a quick google check and could not verify that claim.

Very, very poor news reporting...

**Found it... she was the Assistant Commandant for Intelligence**

Yup - they are back peddling now!

They say they saw boats, listened in on the radio, heard someone SAY "BANG BANG BANG" and then heard "ten shots fired" and THEY, THE NEW blew it up out of proportion!

Found it... a couple links down

However reporting she was the Asst. Commandant and the Asst. Commandant for Intelligence are two very different things.

Of course, CNN is not going to clear up that confusion.

I received 15 emails asking about this in the last 30 minutes. The first indication I had that no shots were fired is that my blackberry wasnt blowing up. Had that happened, it would have been overheating from so many messages.

First issue I have is who runs an exercise on 9-11 with the President yards from the Potomac? Incompetence at its best. Yet another indication that St Elizabeth's is indeed the best place for the CG.

From an official standpoint, CG, please stop disrupting operations in the area with this nonsense. You initiated shutdown of Reagan National for christ sake. Had the CG notified all of the partners in the area, this probably wouldn't be a big deal. The warning circuits are there for a reason. USE THEM!!

As for the media, CONFIRM the story before you look foolish, like you just did.

I'd have to give them a pass on that ONE WORD error between 'an' and 'the'. Since there is no THE Assistant Commandant.

These young members are out there doing what they do EVERY DAY, some moronic, dimm whitted, idiotic, franticm strung out, high tension bimbo reported heard someone SAY, I repeat SAY the WORD BANG on the radio and then saw her Emmy award or whatever useless trinket you get for being first on a story.

She owes the American Public and the Coast Guard an apology, and now, our former shipmate -

I would hate to be the CO of STA Washington, DC right now or the CO of the unit that was conducting the training exercise. I can only imagine the kind of *** chewing the CO will be getting from the District Commander all the way up to the Commandant.

I don't owe anyone anything. There are 135 separate LE entities in DC. There are 2 states, and four Counties that border the Potomac. Everyone is already on edge today, and not a single person has the time or patience to respond to unannounced drills or exercises. We are all on the same team here. The entire region uses a warning circuit called the Washington Area Warning System or (WAWAS). Pick up the handset and with one brief, the entire region knows you are conducting an exercise.

While my comments certainly aren't directed at the boat crew or pilots involved, they are certainly directed at the command and the decision to run an exercise there, today with no notification. There is no excuse for that kind of nonsense.
