I enlisted in the National Guard about a year ago. Wrapped up IET in mid December. Deployment is in my future.

Once I'm on Active duty, other soldiers have told me that I may elect to stay on Active Duty and all I've been told is "See a retention NCO while you're there."

Is that how it really goes down?

I'd like to know a little more about the process, if there are pre-requisites, TIS requirements, etc. Also would like to know if I'd go to another Guard unit, or if it's a service transfer from Guard to RA. Appreciate any help.

If you are at BCT or AIT you can go "Active First" its a program to continue to stay Active you would be Regular Army. If your a Traditional M-Day Soldier then you would have to do a Conditional Release to go Active Duty. If thats what you want talk to a Recruiter, its not hard. If thats whats best for you thats what you should do.
