The chances are slim and depressing .... particularly becasue you have seen the errors of your ways when you got that RE-4, like myself ... but there is a slim hope from what I read on the navy board link below. All I can say is make a damn good case for yourself and be a realist. Check out the site:
According to Para. 2-26 of the FY03 ECM (w/change 3) there are no longer any "RE code" waivers necessary throughout the National Guard. RE codes differ throughout the different branches of service, and the SPD code and narrative reason indicate the underlying situation which necessitated the discharge in the first place. Therefore, waivers are now to be processed by using the SPD and narrative reason for separation. Hope that helps!

What is the ECM you referenced? I am very interested in what this states and whether or not it applies to me. I am working on a waiver for an RE-3 medical discharge...complicated because my entire medical and military record is missing at the NPRC in St. Louis, and all I have is my 214...
Is there an email I can send you some details for your professional opinion? Thanks
Okay, the ECM is the Enlisted Criteria Memorandum, which in effect replaced "annex A" to the NGB 600-200, which is the holy grail of the Guard recruiting world. Basically, it is the whole of the standards and criterion for entrance to the National Guard, and is a nationally used regualtion. If you'd like to send me an email with details for review, my email is:
My waiver was approved in a week. I was just sworn in to the Iowa Army National Guard tonight. My DD214 from the USMC had a re code RE-4b for misconduct due to drug abuse. That was 15 years ago and I've worked hard since then to do the right things. My recruiter told me that the policy was just changed again that they are now using the re codes again. If I was just starting the process to get in now, I wouldn't be able to.
The whole process from the time I first talked to the recruiter until now was about 3 months.
According to the Texas National Guard Armory here in Texas.. New regulations came out in October stating they were not allowed to touch RE-4's from any brance of military service.Of course.. regulations change from time to time AND may be different for each state. Call your national guard recruiter near you if your serious, i'm sure thats the best way to find out
I have a question for a recruiter. I have an RE3 I got chaptered under 5-17 for fear of flying almost 2 years ago. I had over six years of active service before this with no negative marks on my record. I am trying to go into the Guard. My recruiter said that I might have to wait for 24 mnths after discharge. Is there any way of getting around this. I have solved my issues and would like to continue serving my country.
Thanks crayonz and possible for the info. I'm actually looking to relocate to another state before the year is out, and judging from the helpful but limited responses I'm getting here, I guess I'll have to let my fingers do the walking. Although I'm not sure how enthusiastically recruiters are going to reply to someone outside their state e-mailing to ask them how they feel about trying to walk through a waiver for an RE-4 discharge.

They will not touch you before 2 years, so I would plan on doing something else in the mean time (regulatory requirement). Have you considered finishing your degree, then enrolling in OCS (09S OCS candidate option for enlistment)?? If you have your degree, also consider joining the State Military Reserves (SMRs). By joining the SMRs you will get name and face recognition in the Guard for your potential re-entry once the two years have expired. It is a volunteer organization, but it will keep you in touch with many of the same people that can influence your packet. Maj H
Ohio Army National Guard Recruiter here. The RE-Code isn't the problem its the narrative reason that is on your DD214. Thats what tells us the wait the requirments basically. Would be more than happy to help you out just shoot me an E-mail. atreginald.j.sharpe@us.army.mil
Washington state can do a RE4 with a waiver and you have to write a letter stating why you want backin to the state AG. Thats a formality though, once the waiver is done its a done deal.
I received an RE4 w/ a KFS Separation Code for coming back 4 days late (AWOL) after convalescent leave during Basic. I outprocessed in May of 2000 but the actual Separation didn't take place until August 2001 for some reason. I was told when I outprocessed that I would receive an Entry Level Separation.
Since then I have completed my Bachelor's degree and will receive my Masters at the beginning of August. I have letters of recommendations in hand. I took the ASVAB last year and scored a 99. I have recently moved to TX but I will travel to nearby states if it'll help get me back in.
I have tried 2 or 3 different recruiters in OR & AL where I was at before moving here at different times to get back in but they faded away with their contact with me and when I finally tracked them down, they said that they couldn't help me. This was after I filled out all the forms, took the ASVAB, got the letters of recommendation, etc. One even showed up the day I was suppose to go to MEPS and said he couldn't do it.
The bottom line is that I know I screwed up 5 years ago, but I feel that I have made up for that mistake and every time I read an Army Times (yes, I have a subscription) about recruiting being down, I think about how hard I'm wanting to get back in.
I had a psycho wife while I was in the Navy and while I was overseas I called her and she wasn't home, so I called our neighbor who informed me that she checked herself into a mental hospital. The Navy wouldn't allow me to fly home to take care of our daughter so I asked my div-o how to get home. He said go see the counselor and get yourself psychologically discharged due to a hardship. I was concerned about reenlistment and was told I would receive an RE-3H discharge. I tried for many years after the Navy gave me an RE-4 to get it changed, even with recommendations from my congressman, but with no luck. I finally gave up when I turned 30 and went to college and got my Bachelor's degree. I figured I was just too old and wouldn't ever get back in to the service and I should just forget about my childhood dream to be a lifer. I recently found out that the Guard may be able to help. I have contacted a few recruiters but am getting the run around. If there are any recruiters out there that can help me, please contact me: bigslick@usa.com. Also, I need to add that there isn't any code on my DD-214, just an RE-4. I was honorable discharged, but no longer have a copy of my DD-214. I am hopeful that someone out there will be able to help me fulfill my dream for a career in the military.
hey navy_screwed you can join the national guard with an re-4. and once u do ur 12 month time u can transfer to any other branch. i know cause im in the process right now i have an re-4 with an other than honorable conditions discharge so i have to get a waiver cause i was army but u beeing anything other than army should not have as much trouble as i am. it all depends if ur recruiter is willing to do the work
