Ok, so I went to "Train the Trainer" training, and got my certificate. I now have some higher-ups asking what authority that company has to say I am qualified to train CG personnel on CG forklifts. Does anyone know if there is any official instruction on how we are to go about getting forklift operator certified? In the Motor Vehicle Manual it says that Unit CO's shall institute a program to qualify and authorize personnel to operate said equipment. Ok, so based on what standards and criteria? Is this all there is or should I continue my search?

Zman, any OSHA certified class should give you the qualification to "train" other shipmates on safety and operting forklifts. You might have to get a refresher semi-annual though.

If you have a Safety Officer, visit with them. If not, you'll have to dig in the Safety manual. That is where the training requirement lives.
Yorktown hosted a "train the trainer" program in the past. I'm pretty sure they hired a contractor to do it. Having a contract trainer come to your unit might actually cost less, save time away from the unit, and make sure your equipment and environment are safe. Give Yorktown a call, Good Luck! |

Thanks guys. I did find some requirements and guidlines in Section 29CFR1910.178 pertaining to forklift training. I guess now all I need is my designation letter from my CO.
