I have been in the Coast Guard for about six months now. I am at a small boat station in MI. We only have MK's and BM's but i think i want to go SK. So i was wondering if it would be possible to get some insight about the SK rate from SK's. I just want to know how a "regular" day is has an SK? What type of duty do SK's stand? What qualification do you need has an SK3? I know that these questions vary from unit to unit but just looking for some insight, and I am planning on visiting another unit in the near future to see what they do. Thanks ahead of time.

Well, I think you answered yourself with saying the questions vary from unit to unit. However, as an SK3 you'll most likely be doing the general "duties" most new Storekeepers do in the CG. Purchasing(alltypes), property, maintaining a suplly room/locker, possibly some collateral duty(s), standing duty(usually not a bad thing on land), etc. Like you said, it'll vary from duty station to duty station. Now U/W is a different story. I pulled 3 years on a bouy tender and my SK work was more less on my own time. It was a great experience though and it helped me advance being independent duty.

Get underway imo. Knowledge = Power.

Hope this helps,
SK1 Burkle

Hi, I'm a prior service member of the Navy. I joined when I was 18 right after Highschool, and I recieved an honerable discharge after 4 years in Nov 2005 and I'm 24 today. My DD214 says RE1 and a recruiter told me that means I'm eligable to go back if I chose. Since being out of the Navy I've had trouble finding work and my transitioning process was pretty tough. my mother died while I was serving in Sasebo Japan, so I aint really had alot of support. I realize now that life in the military aint all that bad, and knowing what I know now I would've stayed. I've been looking into joining the CoastGaurd and I've spoken with a recruiter. I've been exersizing and studying for my Asvab and hopefully I'll be ready by the end of the month. I have a few questions regarding my entry. Am I eligable to recieve a signingbonus? I read on a website that prior service members have an option to enlist for 1 year, or 4 years and dont have to deploy for 2 years. Is there any truth to that? I dont have a criminal record of any kind, but I do have a few debts such as Bally total fitness, a student loan, and a few doctor bills. Do those debts disqualify me? I want to be an SK, what are the chances of getting in the 9th or 7th district? Thanks for reading my message.

Hey Kevin, put in a good word for me to your XO! I assume you're still PCSing next summer.

Good news Zach. CWO Mitzie Robinson is our new detailer, so you might have a shot. I am heading into the recruiting world next summer, so that should be pretty cool. I should be getting the orders sometime next week. I'm hoping for either Boston or somewhere in Norty Carolina. I have't gotten any other e-mails about my billet though, so I'm not sure how much interest there is. It's a great place to work though. You have a lot of responsibility, but a lot of pull in the command cadre.
