Try a buck 180. 0345-0745 Quartermaster of the Watch followed by Master Helmsmen/Helsman/Bearing taker/Radar Man and logs from 0800 through 1600 then Quartemaster of the Watch from 1545 through 1945. Hit the rack from 2100 then be woken by the BMOW at 0300 and repeat until you return home. Was not a pleasant life. Work day underway = 18 hours. Then 1 in 3 and port and starboard for six months of the year. And some think its the life.........

Things on 180's must have changed a lot. When I was in I was on two of them and the SK's stood no underway watches, just inport QMOW.

The 180's are no longer Coast Guard Cutters; the last one was decommed last year... But yes, the times have changed. Underway I stood BMOW (1 in 4) and then me and two other guys rotated on the helm and manning up after steering for the Aton Detail. If I could go back I would, but only if it was in a better port.

I'm stationed over at ISC Boston and I have learned alot since I got here and we are truly like a big SK family here at ISC Boston, it is split into Purchasing, Accounting, and Property and you will spend at least a year doing all three so by the time you get out you should be pretty versatile and be ready for independent duty.

Same here Stan, in the late 80's the SK's and YN's on WLB-406 Acacia stood no watches whatsoever. Occasionaly you might find one on the bridge shooting angles, but that was only after an 18 hour slumber, a couple movies on the rec deck, a full hot meal, being piped to the bridge 4 times, AND AFTER YOU DISCOVERED WHERE THEY WERE HIDING! LOL! -Jeff

How about the California VS. Florida arguements? I guess the East and West Coast billit debate can begin.

Well, if you have never been to either place it's a helluva lot cheaper to let the gov't pay your way.

You must have been on the Acacia with your name.

SK or YN on the 180's was some of the best jobs either of us could have had. We would back each other up if need be. But 1-4 BMOW underway and inport 1-3 and sometimes when fat 1-5 or 1-6 wasn't bad at all. At least Great Lakes was the best. Even underway we got more sleep than need be and midrats were great.

Was it that obvious? lol

Were you on it? It was pretty cool, and yes we all looked out for eachother, unlike most places you will go (which I won't name).
