The Polar classes if you're single, Alaska if you don't mind the weather. I would never recommend an "M" unit to anyone.

Not a station. Unless you like working directly with nothing but BM's and MK's...ouch.

I generally stay out of the SK threads because I'm retired...But statements like the one above bring me in....Unless you've been there, then why say something so stupid... I think a small boat station is a great place to learn your job...I met many BM that were good "storekeepers." With as much duty as they pull at units without SK's, they need to be...I learned a lot from BM's...Can't say too much about SK work and an MK, but we had some hellashish (sp?) parties... Got to ride small boats and stand some duty...What's wrong with that? Gunk |

Sorry to offend you...but I have been there and done that. I was messing around with one of each rate looking over my shoulder when I posted it, so you can relax on that. But also on the serious side of this, any sk knows that alot of both these rates are notorious for not caring about the procurement laws that sk's are required to follow so they blame it on the sk, when we cant get them the items they want, or they run out of money. I respect what both rates do, but it seems that it does not go the other way. |

I can see both of your points, especially considering I am currently and have been for 3 years stationed at a small boat station. I went from a big white boat where misery was a way of life to a very friendly supply office at a large unit. I loved it. Then I went to the station where I was confronted by what I had seen at the boat with select BM's. I was at first daunted (especially considering that I was the first SK to be there). They had their perceptions and I had mine. I realized that all units have ups and downs. I can now say that I have learned a lot both professionally and personally. I like this unit very much. It took a while, but the command is very understanding of the SK rating and the difference between the BM/MK and support ratings. I feel we provide a useful service as SK's, and the good Coasties agree with that.

Wonderfully said...I too came from a 210 where, like you said, MISERY WAS A WAY OF LIFE!, it just cant be said any better. Then a station, where I too was the 1st SK to be there, and the others just see you as somebody sitting in the a/c. But, they are also the first ones that come too you, when they need a item or they are having computer probs. I do see the commands support, but the others not so much unless they need something.

I'm thinking some of the problems at a unit that never had an SK would be knowing where to get the answer...Most of the BM's and MKs' I worked with were real receptive of what I could show them in the manual...I guess my point being, if you can show them in black and white of what they can and can't do, then there should be no argument...
Not accusing anyone on here of doing this, but nothing pissses me off more than going to someone with something, and they say it can't be done, but without showing me in writing...I like to be showed, and a good storekeeper should like to show and educate others... Hope you guys like the image...I haven't seen it before...Guess I've been out too long...By the way, I too was the first Storekeeper at a small boat station...1982 I was an SK1 and transferred to Station Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard, CA...I had a blast for 4 years...Have a good one guys... Out of curiosity, what made duty on the big white ones miserable?

The SK's don't seem to want to comment on why duty on a big white one was so bad.....hmmmm

With respect to all other rates and their responsibilities, I don't think being an SK on a 378 is bad. That is just my personal opinion and it does not reflect the opinions, responsibilities, and collateral duties of all the other SK's in the CG.
I just now caught this thread... 378's are actually one of the better places that any SK's can have, I think. Especially for 3rd classes and 2nd classes. You become a well-rounded SK, you live and you learn, and then you have an SKC who will be that buffer zone between you and the brass if you need one. I was a 3rd on the Ham and now a 2nd on the Chase and I really, honestly don't think it is bad. Except the upcoming Winter in Alaska patrol, but otherwise, its what you make of it.
