do you have orders to Korea and it is just a layover in China (ie Hong Kong)? If you are AD and have orders then you are allowed to fly w/o a passport as long as you have a copy of hte orders and a valid military ID. Now you should get your Tourist Passport immediately because if you are stuck somewhere you can be screwed big time. You cannot travel to anywhere but the US & Korea with your orders, no where else.
If you are not on orders but traveling then you need a valid passport & if necessary a visa if you are going to be there past a certain amount of time.

Also, I believe that certain countries require permission and I would believe that China is one of them.
