Basic Training |
Trains are fabulous, but it depends . . . Today you need to ask yourself if you're on the train to sightsee, sleep, or just get from point A to point B. Having a month's time in Europe this Dec./Jan., I just looked for travel to Berlin and Rome. Initial travel in Germany, Holland, and Alsace will be by rental car (even though gas is $7.50 a gallon -- don't know if discount coupons are still available w/ID card at the BX). Factors are the number of passengers, purpose of travel, and destination places which make car travel, for me, the most economical and efficient. Then to go to Berlin and Rome, out of Frankfurt, after having turned in the rental car, round trips by plane are the best for time efficiency and cost. Rd trip to Berlin or Rome on Lufthansa are $108 per person.
So train travel may be a step up from driving, but for time and cost it isn't always the most economical today. Also, one needs to consider the age of the person and their weight of luggage and ability/amount of walking, regarding train station (or airport) and the hotel/hostel, etc. Talking of taking trains in Europe, just think, the first time I went to Europe, during college for 3 months in 1967, I slept and ate by the Europe on $5 a Day book, and the full 3-month Eurail Pass was around $300, first class!!! |
