For those that blame President Bush for rising gas prices, I suppose you have to credit him with saving nearly 1000 lives per month.

quote:
Professors Michael Morrisey of the University of Alabama-Birmingham and David Grabowski of Harvard Medical School found that for every 10 percent increase in gas prices there was a 2.3 percent decline in auto deaths. For drivers ages 15 to 17, the decline was 6 percent, and for ages 18 to 21, it was 3.2 percent.

The study looked at fatalities from 1985 to 2006, when gas prices reached about $2.50 a gallon. With gas now averaging over $4 a gallon, Morrisey said he expects to see a drop of about 1,000 deaths a month.

With annual auto deaths typically ranging from about 38,000 to 40,000 a year, a drop of 12,000 deaths would cut the total by nearly a third, Morrisey said.

Note that the lives saved progressively increase from the higher age category to the lower age category ... as it should be!

I think, before this gas crises started, the liberals were talking about adding an additional tax on gasoline to cut down on pollution, to fight global warning.
They like to help in every way they can.

Sorry, those people owe their lives to me. You see I increased my masturbation schedule; for every 10% increase in my weekly schedule there was a 2.3% decrease in highway deaths. Please contribute to my viagra fund. Think of all the lives you could save.

Ok, so let's raise gasoline prices to about $50 a gallon. That way, nobody will be driving and nobody will get killed in a car wreck.

That would be a fair tradeoff, wouldn't it? Roll Eyes

Another good outcome; driving on the highways is now less congested - which makes for a more enjoyable trip (so long as you don't look at the fuel gauge too often). Reminds me of the 1960's, when traffic wasn't a problem while driving the Interstate. I can now scoot along at 70 MPH and take my eyes off the road a moment or two to see the scenery....

Then using that extended logic, we should hope for new gas taxes and even higher gas prices as the tandem effects would remove even more drivers from the road and save even more lives. The quality of life may be disparaging, but at least we'll all be safer!

I thought the high gas prices would cause more deaths.I nearly have a heart attack everytime I have that nozzle in my hand.I really cant see the amount of decrease in autos on the road, that they are talking about.

Oh, but then we would have an increase in bicycle and horse related injuries. Since these are unlikely to be life threatening we would be over-burdening our already decimated health care system. With more and more people not being able to afford health insurance and with fewer and fewer employers providing it, it would tax our already overtaxed Welfare system with all those people going on permanent disability….Oh lord!

The democrats will soon introduce a new plan in Congress to put a stop to this gas crises we are in. They want the nation wide speed limit reduced to 55 again. And everyone wonders why Congress has such a low approval rating.

Apparently, they don't know what else to do. Obama doesn't have a plan, he just doesn't like the Republicans plan's.

He did say that he can get something done in about thirty years.
