Well, he's right about one thing. A marriage contract is one thing; consumation is another.

Arranged marriages are still quite common in other cultures, not just among Arab Muslim's, but we here in the west find it distasteful. Of course, we forget that it was once common for us too, but that's another issue.

I think what most of us, and me, find most offensive is that the "bride" usually has no say in the matter. That runs counter to our understanding of inalienable rights and liberty. The idea that girls and women can be traded like horses is anathema to us.

However, that's applying our social norms to someone elses' and that's always a recipe for trouble. I'm sure we don't like it when they question how WE do things, do we, so what gives us the right to condemn them in turn?

Would anyone feel any differently about it if there was an age limit to consumation and the girl had the unfettered right to refuse the contract before that happened?

ive never heard of it in the states.... maybe some muslim or someone from another country but ive never heard about it with us citizens.... people here do have choices you know... oh yea i forgot about religious cults tho...

i wasnt talking about religious cults...or foreigners...or muslims...im talking about native americans...

well really if they still do that they do have their own laws on their reverations...also i believe they conceder that apart of their religion...

not so much a part of religion actually. more like practicality and tradition. and yes, native americans have their own laws but they also have to submit to the laws of the country. and you do realize that there are large numbers of native americans that dont live on reservations...
