Here we go, enforcing any laws that cleans up corruption and fraud is always met with screaming victim!
Feds spike voter citizenship checks in Georgia By SHANNON McCAFFREY, The Associated Press 4:09 p.m. June 1, 2009 'http://www3.signonsandiego.com/stories/2009/jun/01/us-voting-checks-060109/' ATLANTA — The Justice Department has rejected Georgia's system of using Social Security numbers and driver's license data to check whether prospective voters are citizens, a process that was a subject of a federal lawsuit in the weeks leading up to November's election. In a letter released on Monday, the Justice Department said the state's voter verification program is frequently inaccurate and has a "discriminatory effect" on minority voters. The decision means Georgia must halt the citizenship checks, although the state can still ask the Justice Department to reconsider, according to the letter and to the Georgia secretary of state's office. "This flawed system frequently subjects a disproportionate number of African-American, Asian and/or Hispanic voters to additional, and more importantly, erroneous burdens on the right to register to vote," Loretta King, acting assistant attorney general of the Justice Department's civil rights division, said. King's letter was sent to Georgia Attorney General Thurbert Baker on Friday. Yeh, because everyone knows that none of these people carry ID or can afford it. The decision comes as Georgia awaits word on whether a law passed in the spring that requires newly registering voters to show proof of citizenship will pass muster with DOJ. Under the law that takes effect in January, people must show their proof up front compared to doing checks through databases. Databases lmao, provided by Acorn data. And when counties try to verify data, lawsuits start to slow them down till the election is over A three-judge federal panel in October ordered the state to seek Justice Department preclearance for the checks under the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the same reason the federal agency must sign off on the new law that made Georgia only the second state after Arizona to require such proof. Georgia is one of several states that need federal approval before changing election rules because of a history of discriminatory Jim Crow-era voting practices. Secretary of State Karen Handel blasted DOJ's decision, saying it opens the floodgates for non-citizens to vote in the state. "Clearly, politics took priority over common sense and good public policy," said Handel, a Republican candidate for governor in 2010. Justice Department officials said the citizenship match through driver's license and Social Security data has flagged 7,007 individuals as non-citizens but that many have been shown to be in error. How many is many? Baby bathwater. "Thousands of citizens who are in fact eligible to vote under Georgia law have been flagged," the Justice Department letter said. The Justice Department decision marks the first time the new Democratic Obama administration has weighed in on Georgia's election laws. It is also the first time the Justice Department has rejected a change in election procedures by Georgia since the 1990s, according to a spokesman for the Georgia attorney general. Screw the states "We are pleased with this decision," said Elise Shore, Southeastern Regional Counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund. "It vindicates our filing of the lawsuit." And vindicates voters fraud viva la fraud! But Handel said that more than 2,100 people who attempted to register in Georgia still have not resolved questions regarding their citizenship. Her office's inspector general is investigating more than 30 cases of non-citizens casting ballots in Georgia elections, including the case of a Henry County non-citizen who said she registered to vote and cast ballots in 2004 and 2006. I am sorry but why does it take so long to verify citizenship, oh thats right you have lib groups blocking it, its a right to privacy Handel said the checks were designed to follow federal guidelines to ensure the integrity of the vote and that those eligible are casting ballots. But the ACLU and the Mexican American defense fund sued, saying the efforts amounted to a "systematic purging" of rolls just weeks before the election. Yeh, purging of illegal voters and what a surprise that those 2 groups would be against it Separately, the U.S., Supreme Court is considering a challenge to the portion of the Voting Rights Act requiring Georgia and select other states to seek approval before tinkering with election law. |

Recently, when Oklahoma went through its voter registration data base it found, if I remember correctly, 30K dead folks that voted in the last few elections - some have been dead more than a decade.
Amazing isn't it? When someone wants to clean up voter registration to safe guard the vote of American citizens, its usually the guiltiest that start screaming first and the loudest. A person is required to possess and carry a drivers license to drive a car; the are required to have and be able to show proof of insurance to drive a car; have a passport to travel from one country to another, show a picture ID at the bank and no one says a word, YET the special interest groups start screaming DISCRIMINATION, REPRESSION, DISENFRANCHISEMENT when asked to produce a voters registration card and picture ID to vote to prevent voter fraud and guarantee the rights of real US Citizens to vote and prevent illegal aliens, criminals from commiting voter fraud. |

There is no proof they voted, they were registered by ACORN members though. Hence the lawsuits that are charging voter REGISTRATION fraud. The dead folks on the Oklahoma voter registration roles voted in the last few elections.... Guess you missed the part where it said "But Handel said that more than 2,100 people who attempted to register in Georgia still have not resolved questions regarding their citizenship. In those few cases, wait until the investigation is done. Then you can claim voter fraud on those cases. The thousands that ACORN were involved in, so far none of them are actual voter fraud. The are voter registration fraud. Todays politics remind me of an old saying. - "Ideas are more powerful than guns. If the DOJ is halting the investigations then what possible outcome can there be?

The DOJ said they couldn't use a SSN database to determine if the person is a legal voter. Nothing about the investigations.

If they have to "halt the citizenship checks" that means no more investigation into the legality of the voters. |

Does begging and pleading count as foreplay? |
Hopefully, GA and other states can figure out a different way to investigate voter citizenship. Ensuring that legally registered Americans are making decisions for our country is one of the most basic rights we have.

Listen MOM, I agreee that it is BS that they are doing this, what I am saying id the DOJ is not investigating anyone for voter fraud. Just Voter Registration fraud. I said they were not being investigated for Voter fraud, at that time we were talking about the DOJ not state officials. Voter fraud is not a problem so why are rightists so obsessed with it?
Texas Republicans were so obsessed with forcing this issue during the legislative session that just ended that other legislation that is desperately needed was left behind...like expanding children's health insurance even though Texas is at the bottom of the list for insured children, funding the TxDoT so we can get roads fixed, capping the runaway college tuition fiasco created by the Republicans a few years back just to name a few. Yeah, they damn near shut down the government because they are determined to fix voter fraud...even though none exists. Oh, yeah, the TxDoT will have to be funded...the governor will have to call a Special Session on the taxpayer's dime...all because the Republicans are so fixated on something that was never a problem...that is until they decided that it was... |

The bigger question here is why is the DOJ interfering in States Rights? Other federal agencies, e.g. FEMA require SSN's for courses. etc. so that's really a moot point. If they want to know how to rig elections there are two people from Chicago in the administration who know how to do it.

I doubt that most people on here would consider me a "righist" and I see this as a serious problem. If you choose not follow the laws of the land, then you shouldn't have a say in how it's run. |

I'd buy you a beer right now if I could, just for being one of the very few people here who understand the difference between those two. |

Not interfering with voting rights is not a States Rights issue...it is a democracy issue. States trying to pass this legislature are Republican states and are just trying to dilute the traditionally Democratic voting bloc consisting of minorities, poor, and elderly...the people who generally do not have the kinds of proof of identity that this kind of legislation is demanding. It is just another card rightists are playing in order to stay in power for as long as they can. |

LOL..really? 30,000 voted in the last few elections? What a blatant, out and out LIE that is and you don't think anyone was going to call you on it? Since 2004, as many as 10 (that is TEN), people may have had ballots cast in their name after their death. The investigation also showed that as many as 429 (FOUR HUNDRED and TWENTY NINE) dead people may still be listed as registered across the state. The 10 were likely fraudulently cast ballots (or someone signing the wrong line of the register/roster), but the 429 still listed as registered is not surprising, especially across the entire state. Most election offices I know are woefully understaffed and updating the status of people who have died is kind of low on the priority list. If these databases are shown to be in error when flagging people for citizenship, then the DOJ is correct in looking into this issue. The people that would be disenfranchised far outweigh the number of non-citizens that would actually cast a ballot. When someone does cast a ballot fraudulently, they are subject to imprisonment and heavy fines if they are caught. It is kind of like speeding...we don't put governors on cars to keep them from going over the speed limit, but you are in deep doo doo if you get caught. |

So, what I'm hearing is that many on here think our policy on voter fraud should be the same as policy on our southern border. Let's just keep our head in the sand and hope the problem goes away. |

The only problem with your little smoke and mirrors is that the state of GA offered to supply those IDs for free. Next.... |

That is what you are hearing. If 1 case of voter fraud has happened ID's need to be done and verified. My Ma-inlaw that is a naturalized citizen voted for the first time in the last election. 2 things happened. 1. When she went to register she showed her state ID, you know the ID that minorities cant afford, she paid $10 for hers and being a Sr and minority she managed from somewhere to be able to get this ID from the dmv. And she got it when she arrived here. She was not a citizen at that time. Anyway she presented that ID and naturalization cert to the voter registration dink and they chuckled and said you need to prove you are a citizen. 2. when she went to vote she had a question about the voting machine, the volunteer kept pointing at the straight Dem button and on 1 page kept pointing at the Obama button. Thats when she said loud enough (coz she was annoyed) I dont want to vote for obama did the young man stop. She filed a complaint after one of her daughters suggested it. No feedback from the county. But there were several same complaints. The system is broken. |

That isn't what I think at all (since you quoted me as "many on here think"), but if 7,000 are disenfranchised because of this system to prevent 30 from casting fraudulent ballots, I don't see that as a good trade-off I'm afraid. |

Then the DOJ shouldn't have made this decision. What is wrong with Georgia verifying that voters are citizens??? |

From YOUR quoted article: Justice Department officials said the citizenship match through driver's license and Social Security data has flagged 7,007 individuals as non-citizens but that many have been shown to be in error. "Flagged" non-citizens would not have been allowed to vote. |

They were allowed. They couldnt verify them in time. Face illegals and legals vote in our election sanchez was a prime example of that in CA. |

Well I guess La will be targeted next. They require a d/l or some other form of picture ID to vote. I have no problems proving I am a citizen. Go to any store and write a check and see if they do not require an ID. Maybe a bank to cash a check when you do not have an account there and see what happens..... No damn different than asking for an ID to vote IMHO.
